I am currently a fourth grade teacher in the Greenwich School District. I have been tutoring and teaching for the past six years. I grew up in a family of educators. My mother was an elementary school principal for 35 years and I knew I would follow in her footsteps with a passion for learning. The best thing about being a teacher is that you are a lifelong learner. In the past six years I have learned various ways to personalize learning, strategies to differentiate my instruction and to incorporate real-world experiences in all that I teach. I think it is important for students to understand the "why" we are learning what I am teaching and for students to discover learning on their own. My elementary school is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school so we plan our lessons using an inquiry approach. Inquiry learning is a way for students to think deeper, ask more questions and explore in a way that makes sense for them.
I love tutoring because it allows me to get to know various learning styles on a one-to-one basis. It is a change for me to go from a class of 22 to a class of one and that gives me an opportunity to take all that time to focus on the needs of only that child.
Before I became a teacher I worked in television as an audience coordinator. Any student who has had me as his/her teacher can tell you that every day in my class is like a live TV show! We learn a lot and have so much fun along the way! I always say- if I'm not learning, the student isn't learning, and if I'm not having fun, the student is not having fun. Tutoring is a group effort between the student, the parents and the teacher. If we work together, we can conquer anything!
