I have some experience as an AVID Tutor at a High School-I'm very much about helping students to become adept at problem solving, in addition to concentrating on their mastery of the material. I love tutoring because I think that any student can succeed given the right guidance, and feel that the system as it stands gives up on far too many students.
While I practically have my degree in English (pending approval for august graduation) there are many other things that make me a capable tutor-I'm a lifelong reader with a great affection for that spans from my childhood. My own personal SAT Score (taken in 2011 or so?) was 1920, with 780 of those points coming to me from the reading section-and I regularly find myself peer editing essays on personal request. Most of all, for me, English isn't simply an academic subject, it's something of an art form-all the components that we are graded on within the school system fit together in a very natural way, that with right perspective and guiding hand, can become clearly evident.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
