About Beverly

I have a B.A. in math (Bowdoin College, 1975), and a master's degree in Computer Science (Rensselaer, 1996). I have worked in the Information Technology industry for 30 years. I have trained other industry professionals in SQL (Structured Query Language). I have also been a student in Latin, French, German, Hebrew and Greek. I appreciate the beauty of other languages, and the challenges of learning another language.

I am combining my love of communication with my computer background. I have recently completed a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course. Combining that with my professional experience, I can help ESL/ESOL adults improve their written and spoken English. My background in business and information technology can assist you in writing job applications, preparing for job interviews, improving your usage of English verb tenses, and even helping adults tackle college computer courses.

My focus in on functional reading, writing, speaking and listening. What do you need to be able to do better? Pronunciation? Vocabulary? Faster understanding? More confident writing? Together we will set objectives to meet your goals, and work within your time frame to produce results.

I am offering ESL/ESOL tutoring at my home in Fairfield County, Connecticut. At our first meeting, we will do an assessment of the student's needs and goals. I will also accept groups of no more than three people. One hour classes may be scheduled for weekdays between 3 and 7 pm and Saturday mornings.

I have real computer and communication skills from 30 years in the IT Industry.

Learners may contact me via email, and should describe their learning needs and proposed schedule.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

In my own education toward several academic degrees, I studied Latin, French, German, Hebrew and Greek. I have a master's degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1996). In my IT career as an Information Architect, I have taught SQL (structured query language) and many of my students spoke English as a second language. I have just completed an online course in teaching English as a foreign language, and my final grade was 98/100. (Certificate from: TEFLOnline was developed by Bridge, an accredited institution and the largest provider of TEFL courses in the United States.)

Beverly is a really nice person, calm, explains really well and give good tips.

My first class with Beverly was very nice and interesting, we spoke about verb tenses and how they can be difficult for a person who's studying English as a second language. Later, we discussed ideas for how I can improve my English in different areas; to improve my reading, Beverly suggested I read books, for listening she suggested I watch some films like "The Martian", to improve my writing she
