About Zachary

Hello! I am a Senior undergraduate student currently attending the University of Connecticut. I am an honors History major, minoring in Geographic Information systems. I am also a member of the Phi Alpha Theta National Honors History Society.

I am a recipient of the University of Connecticut's William P. O'Hara Endowed Scholarship and UConn IDEA Grant. The UConn IDEA Grant is awarded to aid self-directed and self-developed independent research. My research focus is mainly developing a methodology for digitizing, geoprocessing, visualizing and mapping historical data. This method of research requires intensive historical investigation and analysis utilizing a multitude of diverse practices. I've been a member of several research teams such as: the digital humanities project Virtual Hartford (an education website dedicated to Hartford, CT microhistories), Geomorphology and Earth Processes Research Team, and Assistant to the Connecticut State Archeologist (at the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History in developing an online interface to house data of the state office). I have gained considerable and diverse expertise in historical and spatial analysis.

As a former Census and Geospatial Data Assistant at the University of Connecticut Libraries' Maps and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC) and Connecticut State Data Center I have gained a more professional edge to the quality and effort of my work. I have presented my research at two professional academic conferences: the Association for the Study of Connecticut History (ASCH) Conference and the Northeast Arc Users Group Spring Spatial Technologies (NEArc) Conference. I specialize in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - mainly, but not exclusively, ArcGIS and Google Maps. I have a decent knowledge of scholarly open source software such as Omeka-Neatline, Google Fusion Tables and open source web browsers such as SeaMonkey to utilize HTML source code in order to develop websites embedded with dynamic maps and GISs.

I am capable, qualified, and motivated to help students develop their own intellectual curiosities by providing them the ability to effectively communicate either by prose for verbal or auditory students and maps, graphs and code for visually or spatially thinking students. Authentic and deep learning comes from diverse and dynamic understanding and analysis - I hope to provide that to each and every student I work with.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dreamweaver

I have been developing web-based pages using open source software packages like SeaMonkey to manually create webpages by using HTML code. I have been working on this research for the Connecticut State Archeologist and for my minor in GIS. My experience with scholarly open source software that utilizes HTML code extends to Google Fusion Tables, Omeka-Neatline and SeaMonkey.

GIS

I have a Bachelor's degree in History and GIS from the University of Connecticut, with three years of professional and academic experience with GIS. I worked for the Connecticut State Data Center and UConn Libraries' Map and Geographic Information Center as a Census and Geospatial Data Assistant. I have presented, authored and co-authored GIS related research at professional academic conferences.
