About Dr. Dorrie

Welcome to Dr. Dorrie’s qualifications and information page. I am currently certified for science teaching in Connecticut (Grades 7-12) including cross certifications for Biology, Earth Science and General Science. I received an Award of Excellence for my Praxis Test in the General Science Content Knowledge exam.

I am the teacher who motivates students to learn how to use science to solve problems and subsequently understand how the world works. I can do this by incorporating the 5 E’s of learning science: 1) Engage - Capture the students’ attention, stimulate their thinking, and activate their prior knowledge; 2) Explore – Motivate the students to explore the concepts through a set of experiences; 3) Explain – Encourage the students to find ways to construct their own knowledge of the concept; 4) Elaborate - Give the students opportunities to extend their understanding and apply their knowledge to real life situations; and 5) Evaluate – Assess the students’ understanding of the concepts using both formative and summative approaches. I am very interested in working with students who are passionate about environmental science.

When working with students, I embrace the teaching philosophy of the Learning Paradigm. Here I focus on the most important goal – how much the student has learned in any given tutoring session. I encourage my students’ curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, participation, public presentation, and short-term and long-term goals. Within this framework, I develop reciprocity between students and me, give prompt feedback, encourage active learning techniques, emphasize time on task, communicate high expectations, and respect my students’ diverse talents and ways of learning. One main principle that I focus on in all of my tutoring endeavors is the Learning Paradigm where students take an active role in their learning. My role as a science and math tutor secondary school science teacher is to interact with my student to facilitate his/her learning. Thus, the student focuses on content, skills and participation, and the learning environment includes the process of achieving student learning goals with me as a facilitator. I am available to answer questions, provide additional information, and lead the students into critical thinking and determining the answer themselves based on their own knowledge and experiences. I believe that hands-on learning enhances students’ visual skills, powers of observation, creativity, imagination, and inspires confidence and an excitement to gain knowledge by learning.

I have a PhD in ecology, with an emphasis on stream ecology and aquatic insect biology and with extensive experience in science education outreach. Furthermore, I have considerable teaching experience in a variety of classroom environments from in addition to high school. I have taught various sciences courses at both a research university and a community college. I was a Teaching Assistant at the University of California Davis and an Adjunct Professor at the Lake Tahoe Community College. I was also a part-time University Assistant at Western Connecticut State University, where I worked with students in the Study Skills Laboratory in improving their work products for college level courses.

While conducting my research, I supervised 5-7 undergraduate students and colleagues from UC Davis, local colleges, and universities in foreign countries during my summer fieldwork for three years of data collection. In addition, I managed seven students with an interest in entomology who worked in my laboratory with aquatic insects in picking, sorting, and identifying various and numerous organisms for a period of two years. I trained all of these students and professionals to conduct rigorous research in stream ecology and aquatic insect biology and have inspired some students to apply to graduate school and earn an advanced degree.

I have a Master of Science degree from Colorado State University in Watershed Sciences. I completed my thesis titled, "Seasonal Patterns of Nitrate/Nitrogen in the Riparian Corridor Along Sheep Creek, Colorado." The research addressed non-point source water pollution as caused by the effects of cattle grazing on a riparian corridor. My project combined the biology of cows with range science management and stream ecology. I graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies. My undergraduate Honors thesis titled "Acidlake: A pH/Alkalinity Model," consisted of a computer model predicting lake alkalinity and pH changes due to acid deposition in Vermont.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

My extensive education and coursework makes me qualified for ACT Math. I use math in my teaching and tutoring extensively. I believe that standardized tests are about a student's knowledge of the material as well as one's ability to take standardized tests. I work with students on content knowledge as well as study skills and test taking strategies.

ACT Science

As a scientist and researcher, I have spent my career evaluating scientific data. I have extensive experience and can easily help students succeed in their endeavors to score high on the ACT Science Test. The test consists of Data Representation Passages, Research Summaries Passages, and a Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. The reading, understanding, and interpretation of data are crucial for understanding science.

Finally, I believe that standardized tests are about a student's knowledge of the material as well as one's ability to take standardized tests. In conclusion, I work with students on content knowledge as well as study skills and test taking strategies.
