About Ivy

Dear Students and Parents,

Hello! I am a new graduate from Teachers College, Columbia University. I majored in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I am a native Chinese speaker, and I am fluent in English and Spanish. I have been tutoring Chinese for seven years and I am currently working at a private school to teach Chinese and TOEFL. I have also taught ESL at Columbia Community Language Program, focusing on integrated language skills or conversational skills.

I am also specialized in TOEFL prep, in which I myself got 115 points out of 120. As an international student, I know the test inside out and I can combine content knowledge, strategy and test-taking skills in my tutoring. If the student's native language is Spanish or Chinese, I can fully understand their difficulties learning English and detect their problems promptly.

Besides languages, I am able to tutor Algebra, Geometry, Ecology and basic Genetics as well. I went to Mount Holyoke College for undergrad with a major in Environmental Studies. Scientific writing is one of my specialties. I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a college-level biology class when I was a sophomore, where I led a lab class all by myself and graded students' lab reports, papers and exams. I also was a biology tutor for my college, mainly assisting students with Ecology.

I have great patience with my students, and I have experience working with students from different ages (1-30) and different cultures (American, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Vietnamese and many more). I love to see my students achieve their goals and learn the skills they need for their future.

Best regards,
Ivy L.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

Hi! I am a native Chinese speaker who is from Shanghai. After passing a qualification exam, I have tutored Chinese to college students at Mount Holyoke College for 3 years. I encouraged students to practice conversation through topics they are interested in and hot topics in China. I also helped students dictate Chinese phrases and explained the stories behind to help them memorize. Thank you.

Piano

Hi! I started playing the piano when I was four. I passed Level 9 (out of 10) qualification in Shanghai. In College, I took piano class for 3 years and did five recitals.
