I have successfully tutored young children, high school students, and adults struggling with various aspects of French, from getting that accent down, to speaking rhythms, and increased mastery of vocabulary, reading, and grammar. I work on improving study habits, test taking, and enjoying the learning process.
In high school I struggled with French and sought out a tutor myself. The experience turned around my uninspiring performance and ignited a passion for French. I know what a good tutor can do for a struggling or ambitious student. I went on to major in French at college and then later to earn my doctorate in French.
While teaching French grammar and literature at SUNY-Binghamton, I earned top student teaching evaluations. Although I am easy going, I know how to motivate and set challenging goals.
Apart from my own learning experiences and academic training, I have also twice lived in France, giving me a direct feel for the people and culture. While studying at the Alliance Française in Paris, I lived in a classic tiny attic apartment overlooking the beautiful Jardin de Luxembourg. Later I lived in Maisons-Alfort, just outside of Paris, and commuted by métro into downtown Paris to conduct research at the Bibliothèque Nationale. I've also lived in Clermond-Ferrand and Pont-de-l'Arc, the latter while directing the SUNY system-wide study abroad program in Aix-en-Provence.
I am also certified to teach English (as a second language) and Vocabulary. Many of my ESL students have not only dramatically improved their speaking skills, but have also dramatically improved their school performance across all subjects.
I enjoy helping students improving their skills and finding their direction as learners. If you are looking to start learning French or continue studying it, then look no further than Robert J. He was absolutely wonderful to work with and was instrumental in helping me master the basics of this beautiful, but sometimes difficult language. Robert's teaching methods are unlike anything I have ever come into contact with in previous language classes and allowed me to correctly learn some of the basic concepts of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure within a short period of time. He was always punctual to lessons and came prepared with an organized plan of action. He was very patient and offered thorough, detailed explanations for all of my questions and concerns. Moreover, he has a friendly, genuine personality and his enthusiasm for French language and culture make lessons really enjoyable. Due to Robert's incredible teaching skills, I am excelling in my French classes in school and able to learn new material with confidence.
I've only been tutoring with Robert for about a month or so, but I can already start to feel the changes with my french. I've began to show more confidence in reading when at school, my French vocabulary has grown immensely and I can now recognize and acknowledge French culture and history! I love having lessons with Robert, he brings so much enthusiasm to tutoring and he's an absolute pleasure to learn French from! If you're looking for a tutor who will help show actual results and make you love French more, Robert is definitely your guy!
Bob is an excellent tutor! I took French in junior and high school but needed to try and fix my accent before a work trip to Paris. Bob helped immensely, and is just super nice to boot. Merci!
Robert is just the type of tutor I was looking for. He is very patient, very precise with pronunciation, and I think this is a perfect match. I know we can continue to make progress.
I met with Bob twice a week for five months prior to my travels to France. I was surprised how well prepared I was considering I knew nothing about French before I met Bob. If you're looking for a tutor who will adapt to your learning style and will truly take an invested interest in you, Bob is your guy!
The greatest TEACHER you can ask for! Bob is a teacher who can sense children’s inner world which is not common in adults! I am happy for my child and for myself (as a mother) to be so lucky to find him!!! Two of my friends, who are also physicians, are grateful for the referral! We are lucky such teachers exist for our children!
He is the best teacher among teachers who I have met ever. He always give me customized solution according to my skill level and situation around me. And lessons with him are always pleasant and motivating me. He teach my daughter and me. He is good at both teaching children and business English. I really would like to recommend him for others.
Robert is a personality very nice; he is patient and is in tune of the student, the lessons aren’t boring with him, and he has a big culture. It is a pleasure to learn. Great!!!
Robert is a great teacher. Lessons are well thought out, each one building on the materials from the previous session. He is patient and does a wonderful job of explaining things in a clear way. He has made learning a new language a lot of fun, as well!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
