About Jennifer

Thanks to the fact that I’ve been tutoring ever since finishing high school, I have more than ten years experience tutoring maths and ESL, among other subjects. I have a BS in Mathematics with an emphasis on statistics and operations research, an MA in International Relations and hold a TEFL certification.

MATHS
In addition to tutoring maths, I have also taught high school mathematics, including Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus and AP Stats. I appreciate how important it is to be able to say the same thing in many different ways, whereas some teachers think that if they repeat the same directions over and over, their students will eventually understand. The great thing about tutoring one-on-one is having the chance to learn how individual students learn best and adapt appropriately. I am extremely patient with all of my students and am very creative when it comes to finding ways to explain complex concepts and effectively communicate “big picture” ideas.

ENGLISH
I have a TEFL certification and almost four years experience teaching ESL in Korea, from elementary level to adult. I like to focus on the more practical aspect of ESL – fluent conversational skills – but I can also teach grammar clearly and effectively. The fun part of teaching English for me is the diverse range of topics and the interesting conversations that unfold with students as they improve their English. Besides ESL, I also have quite a bit of experience proofreading and editing, especially business proposals and PhD dissertations because of my strong maths and economics background.

When I am not tutoring, I am also teaching. I am a professional instructor and teach the maths portion of the GMAT at a private institution for ESL students.

I have experience working with all types of students, from those who are not being challenged enough in the classroom to those who have a lot of difficulty just keeping up with the rest of their class, whether it’s because of a learning disability or just the inability to stay focused.

Unlike a lot of other tutors, I don’t tend to work with the same students for long periods of time. Instead of simply helping students with their homework, I like to help them develop their own strong study habits and learn how to answer their own questions so that they can effectively teach themselves and not always have to depend on a tutor. Personally, I feel this is the goal of any good teacher – to not just teach a subject, but to teach students how to learn on their own.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been tutoring Algebra 2 about ten years and have taught high school Algebra 2.

Nice and on time

Jennifer has tutored my daughter twice in Geometry. My daughter says that Jennifer makes everything clear and that she has a complete understanding of the material after each session. She is also very nice and always on time. I would highly recommend Jennifer as a Math tutor
