About Stan

I'm a math tutor. I got my start in tutoring at my college computer club. Many students in the computer club were good with computers, but bad with math, and I found myself trying to help them when I could. My first paying job came when I started helping a friend's sibling. They needed help doing math homework while I was around, and I helped them out. Later on, my friend's mother asked me to help prep my friend's sibling for their high school pre-calc finals.

Typically, I work in high school level math. More specifically, I mean geometry, algebra, and precalc/trigonometry. However, I do have a background in more advanced subjects, like calculus. While I don't always tutor more advance math, I can address these more advanced subjects if they come up.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I have been studying C++ and other objected oriented programming languages for over five years now. This includes self study, as well as formal education in C++ (and other programming concepts) as part of my Computer Science degree. I also have in the past tutored friends in computer related topics. This ranged from explaining programming concepts (usually by metaphor to simplify picking up the idea) or simply helping correct program errors.

JavaScript

I work with JavaScript on a regular basis. This mainly has taken the form of several JavaScript programs meant to help run websites that I have worked. Further, I am a Computer Science major in college. With this background, I have experience in language neutral concepts like data structures and algorithms, which help deepen my knowledge of Javascript.

Precalculus

I teach multiple subjects in math, however, I have the most experience actually tutoring precalculus. These different subgroups of math, however, are often interrelated, and build off of each other. Knowing geometry helps with precalc, precalc sets the groundwork for calculus, and knowing calculus can help me simplify precalc problems.

Trigonometry

I am fairly well acquainted with trigonometry. It, and other precalculus concepts, are typically the most common subjects I have tutored. Further, as part of my course load for school, I have to take physics classes, where trig is very common. So, through application of trig for school, I have become fairly well acquainted with the subject.
