University of St. Joseph (Master's)
I am a magna cum laude graduate of University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. I earned a GPA of 4.0 in my coursework at Southern Connecticut State University for certification in Art Education. I just completed the requirements for a Master of Arts Degree from University of Saint Joseph and am awaiting approval of my application for cross-endorsement in Special Education. I entered the Southington school system as an Elementary Reading Tutor and subsequently became a Special Education Paraeducator at Kennedy Middle School where I have remained for the past three years. I work part time with students in grades 6-8 in general education and resource math classrooms. Previously I was a PreK Teacher for six years and a Kindergarten Art Teacher for two years. I also worked for MARC: Community Resources as Coordinator of Saturday for Kids, a program for children and young adults with disabilities.
As a mom with three children of my own, my educational background and all of my work experience stem from either my love of art or my love of children. Prior to my work in the education field for the past ten years, I also have applied art experience in graphic design and product development. I designed advertisements and marketing materials for Advest, Inc., created children’s craft kits with instructions for S&S Worldwide, developed packaging and presentations of logos and patterns for flatware and hollowware at World Tableware, and created digital artwork for children’s educational software programs. I love tutoring because I prefer working with students one-on-one rather than in large groups. My greatest satisfaction comes from teaching and making a positive difference in students' lives.
In my position as a paraeducator, I have demonstrated that math is one of my academic strengths. As a result, I have had the pleasure of being assigned to work exclusively with students in math classes this past year. I enjoy making math fun through the use of manipulatives, visuals, games and puzzles. This past year I worked with students in Elementary Math, Prealgebra, and Algebra 1, but I also love geometry.
I have taken numerous art courses throughout high school and college and have also taken private drawing classes. I have worked with watercolors, oils, pencil, colored pencils, charcoal and pastels. I am technically proficient in realistic representation, and I have excellent color sense.
I would be happy to further discuss my qualifications as a tutor in art or math and to share my art portfolio and math activities I have done with students. I am generally available for tutoring late afternoons, evenings or weekends. I am a magna cum laude graduate of University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BFA in Painting from UConn. I also am certified in Art Education, PreK-Grade 12. I have taken numerous drawing courses and have won awards for my artwork.
