About Kathryn

I am a recent chemistry graduate with three years of experience in peer tutoring at my college. I have learned the method of Socratic questioning, in which I help the student arrive at correct answers by asking guiding questions about previously learned information and general problem-solving strategies. I am also comfortable using visual aids and analogies as teaching tools. I believe that making connections to earlier material and finding ways of organizing the present material are key to long-term learning, and I like to direct some attention toward improving overall study strategies, e.g., by making tables of information to be memorized that are organized by relevant conceptual factors. My goal is not just to help teach you course material, but to help you learn how to teach yourself. I am a recent chemistry graduate with three years of experience in peer tutoring at my college. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I received top marks in general chemistry in both high school and college, and was approved to tutor introductory chemistry at the on-campus drop-in center, which I did for two years. I learned to tutor via the "Socratic method" of asking leading or challenging questions rather than directly instructing what to do next when a student is stuck, so that they have the experience of figuring out the solution with their own logic. I also have experience with helping students to structure their studying strategies with respect to the overall class, including how much time to spend on reading, practice problems, and exam review.

Organic Chemistry

I received A's in both basic organic chemistry and advanced synthetic organic chemistry in college. I was approved to tutor organic chemistry at the on-campus drop-in center, which I did for two years, receiving thanks and compliments from several of my tutees. I find that helping my students find ways to "chunk" the information is usually key, since O-chem can come across as way too many reactions to learn. For example, several students have found it helpful to make a table of alkene reactions that groups them by stereoselectivity and regioselectivity; to put some time into understanding a general carbonyl substitution so that a specific mechanism can be worked out "on the fly" with good accuracy if necessary; and to think of retrosynthesis in terms of finding pairs of nucleophiles and electrophiles.
