Early in my teaching career I was a title I teacher, instructing grades 3 to 5 in math and reading. I then became a second grade teacher for nine years. I believe in making education fun and captivating for students. I am well versed in phonics, reading comprehension, reading skills (inferencing, summarizing, retelling, cause and effect, comparisons etc. ). In math, I was the leader for 4th and 5th grade Math Olympiads and have been teaching with Everyday Mathematics, an interactive and hands-on program. Children are such great little sponges. It's such fun to draw out their enthusiasm to learn. I love it. Prior to teaching, I worked as a clinical librarian and a computer programmer. I am married and have 2 children, ages 21 and 18.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.S in Zoology, a master's in Library Science and a certification in Elementary Education (K-6). Early in my career, as a Title I teacher, I instructed students who struggled in math, reading and writng in grades 3 through 5. During that time, I taught Kindergarteners for 1 hour a day, basic concepts such as opposites, rhyming, colors, sight words, phonics reading and basic math skills. I instructed the 4th and 5th graders in Math Olympiads. I was a member of "Partners Around Literacy" (PAL) to encourage and work with parents regarding children's langauge development and literacy. I tutored an ESL first grade student in phonics, reading, language and math. I taught second grade for nine years. I have received annual professional development classes in the various reading, writing and math practices.
I have been a second grade teacher for 9 years. Along with the reading program, I taught phonics using the MacMillan McGraw series. I also tutored phonics before and after school at my school in Vernon, Ct for 2 years. I have the phonics base computer program, Lexia that I had my struggling students perform. For those students I would teach small groups using the Lexia lesson Plans.
Study skills require the student to first grasp the whole picture of the subject being studied. Next the main ideas along with the details need to be extracted from the material Once this is accomplished the student needs to reread the material until familiar with it. To guarantee the material has been retained (hopefully in long term memory), the student needs to review at a later date. As an elementary teacher for 12 years, I have developed expertise in K-5 reading, math and writing.
