I am a tutor specializing in English and SAT/ACT test preparation. I have been tutoring for nine years. I received a B.A. in Classics and American History (Wheaton College), I have done Master's coursework in American Studies (Trinity College) and graduate studies in archaeology/anthropology (Harvard University). Aside from working with students on their regular curriculum, I have provided intensive instruction preparing them for the SSAT, PSAT, SAT/ACT, and AP History examinations. The relationship I foster with students is one of collaboration. It is important that they take ownership of their education, at any level, in order to achieve their potential. My approach is to provide inspiration and help motivate them in order to guide and instruct them towards attaining their goals. I thoroughly enjoy assisting all students, from Special Needs to Advanced Placement students. I embrace their different levels of proficiency and learning styles.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a substitute teacher, periodically, over the years, primarily at the elementary level. My expertise focuses on reading, vocabulary and writing. I am experienced in classroom teaching, small groups and as a tutor. I place emphasis on engaging the interests of the student, initially, towards books which interest them. From there we can explore other types of literature in order to provide them with a wide spectrum of exposure.
Reading is a lifetime pursuit and should be introduced and encouraged. Careful consideration should be made over any selection of reading materials to promote interest and engagement whether it is poetry or a mystery. I thoroughly enjoy working with students to help them achieve a rewarding comprehension of any reading material written for their audience.
I have worked with three students (one who is Spanish speaking and is a freshman in high school and two high school Chinese students). While my instruction focuses on their academic needs, I also provide them with a ESL tutorial. I enjoy this work and find the results rewarding.

Understand the difference?
Punctuation makes all the difference. Faulty parallel construction is a common mistake.
When do you use "who" and "whom"?
When do you use "farther" and "further"?
To many English grammar was a year they wished didn't happen. Some realize now that it is crucial to success in any occupation that requires writing as part of their job. My program of instruction engages each student to explore the structural relationships of the English language.
I took two courses in public speaking while in college. My experience includes giving political campaign speeches, lecturing and teaching. I am able to instruct and cultivate individuals in public and personal discourse, from the informative to the persuasive aspects.
I have assisted students in reading comprehension, including building a proficient vocabulary for the SSAT and SAT examinations. In addition to numerous timed tests, I work with them on reading essays, short stories, editorials, etc. These exercises instruct the student to critique and master strategies which they will employ in their academic and personal pursuits. On test day, I have found that this approach truly prepares them to do well on any test focused on reading comprehension.
I have conducted monthly writing workshops for students who are planning to take the SAT to prepare them for the essay portion of the exam. Prompts similar to those which appear on the actual test are given to students who are given 25 minutes to produce an essay. The student is provided with a score, an analysis, and a detailed commentary on his or her essay. It provides a platform from which they can acquire advanced writing techniques with which to produce an effective and persuasive essay. Sessions are custom designed to address areas of weakness, provide strategies and tips, build a proficient vocabulary, and instruct them in writing a high-scoring essay. Providing a one-on-one tutorial enables a student to maximize the opportunity to have questions addressed as they arise and more practice on material to support competency.
The SSAT test is not an intelligence test. Rather its questions are targeted towards skills and concepts that are different from those used on a day-to-day basis in school. For instance, very few English teachers- at any level- spend a lot of time teaching students how to do analogies or sentence completion questions. Through review of academic material and acquiring strategies students can perform well on the SSAT.
My most extensive experience in developing effective study skills was through the education of my four children, three of whom have graduated from college and a daughter studying at Vanderbilt University. Study skills are the underpining of learning. Developing organizational skills early in life will establish a firm foundation from which every student will be successful. It may seem unimportant at first, but careful attention to setting oneself up daily makes any work easier to tackle. This is not a difficult task and is one, which with some creativity is actually fun to implement.
If you had an alokezia moment, what happened? Words are omniscient; they are a powerful tool. If you have a commanding vocabulary it will have an impressive effect in your writing and speaking. Learning vocabulary is not an arduous task, but can be acquired in an entertaining and stimulating way. My method has been successful for many students.
Between writing workshops, held locally, and individual instruction, I have assisted students in all aspects of writing: from the mechanics to persuasive essays. I have been doing this for the past 9 years.
