About Cherylyn

As an experienced professional educator I help high school and college students learn chemistry and physical science, improve analytical skills, and develop problem solving skills. My students' confidence, learning pace, and test scores increase. I have been teaching chemistry and physical science for more than five years in Connecticut for students of all abilities, and I am CollegeBoard certified in AP chemistry.

All of my students made significant progress in their learning and confidence, and their grades have improved. Although many tutors have passed a chemistry/science class, few know how to teach others. With years of experience as a professional educator I can teach, reinforce, correct misunderstandings and provide practice for mastery of chemistry/science concepts.

Prior to my teaching experience I worked for an international corporation, inventing and developing new materials with a team. My experience ranged from the laboratory invention through development to commercialization and patenting new products. Most students commonly hold something I invented.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored many students in algebra to strengthen their problem-solving skills before tutoring them in chemistry. In many subjects, students with weak math skills will not be as successful as those with solid algebra, geometry, trigonometry skills.
It is a natural fit to help students improve their algebra skills and then apply those skills to chemistry concepts. I can explain principles, show examples, and provide and review practice problems.

Algebra 2

I am a certified teacher and I have tutored many students in math and sciences. I help students make connections between concepts, help them develop problem-solving skills, provide great reference sheets, so my students feel confident.

Chemistry

I studied Chemistry and earned a Bachelor's degree and a PhD to do research., and I enjoyed doing so in industry. I invented new specialty plastics that are used for many devices today. In addition, teaching has always been part of my spirit, and I am delighted to help others understand chemistry and learn problem-solving skills. I earned the certification to teach sciences and have been an educator for more than ten years. I have successfully tutored many high school and college students taking courses and preparing for exams.

MCAT

With a detailed understanding of physical sciences, required math skills, and teaching experience (certified), I have helped many students (adult, college, high school) prepare for a wide variety of entrance or competency exams for more than 10 years. I am current on the test formats and best strategies for success on MCAT, TEAS. SAT, ACT, and AP exams. I will suggest pacing and strategies to best prepare for the exam in the time available. I can combine as needed: review or instruction on critical topics, evaluate practice tests with explanation, and provide useful tools to relate or retain information.

Organic Chemistry

I studied and did research in organic chemistry, earning my PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Arizona. I taught chemistry labs and tutored chemistry students of all abilities. In industry, I synthesized new organic materials that were commercially successful. They are now used in a wide variety of electronic devices.

Prealgebra

In teaching chemistry, I have needed to help students develop their math skills to apply prealgebra to the chemistry problems. Learning both at the same time is extremely difficult, so I prefer they have a very solid foundation in the math before teaching the science. I review or teach math skills to nearly all of my students, whether they are in a math class or a science class. For younger students, I use some objects (often legos) and models to provide a visual and something they can manipulate while learning the concepts.

Knowledgable and patient tutor.

Cherylyn prepared me for my chemistry quiz. She helped break down the problems into smaller steps and clarified a few principles for me. As a result, I went into the quiz much more confidently.
