Sourthern Conneciticut State University (Master's)
My name is Mildred. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish obtained at Western Connecticut State University in 2003 and a Master’s Degree in Spanish at Southern Connecticut State University in 2009. Spanish is my first language and as a tutor will use my linguistic skills and knowledge of the culture in the classroom with my students. Through my extensive volunteer teaching experience, I have developed a passion for teaching. Between 2006 and 2009, I worked with adults who speak Spanish, but did not read or write the language. I used phonetics, sentence structure, proper grammar, and extensive writing to effectively teach them to read and write the Spanish language. They came to understand the importance of reading and writing in their own primary language. Also, I have some experience teaching young teenagers and children Spanish as a second language. I would welcome the opportunity to use my teaching skills as a tutor.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I have worked as a tutor with adults who speak Spanish, but did not read or write their own language. I used phonetics, sentence structure, proper grammar, and extensive writing to effectively teach them to read and write the Spanish language. They had come to understand the importance of reading and writing in one’s own primary language. Also, I have experienced teaching young teenagers and children Spanish as a second language. For example, if I wanted to teach the numbers in Spanish, I started with the first 10 numbers 1-10.
APPROACH TO TUTORING: When I am tutoring to my students, I always explain to them that everything in the class is put attention for the lesson. In addition, I try leaving a sense or support by providing references to material that can help advance the student knowledge. I try to guide and coach to assist the student to become a successful and independent learner. My name is Mildred. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish obtained at Western Connecticut State University in 2003 and a Master’s Degree in Spanish at Southern Connecticut State University in 2009. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
