About Carolyn

I have twenty four years experience in the legal field. My career has required extensive writing including research, expository and persuasive papers; legal briefs and memoranda; opinion pieces; and training materials. I have also served as faculty for attorney trainings, taught elementary students about the law, and mentored new attorneys. My profession requires me to write clearly, concisely and persuasively. I have experience as a copy editor during college and law school providing me with strong proof reading skills. I have also enjoyed teaching children and youth throughout my life: swim lessons, coaching basketball and helping my own children succeed academically.

I attended Vassar College and earned Honors for my Political Science thesis and graduated with a 3.5 GPA. In addition to my major in Political Science which required quality writing, I also took many English, Philosophy and History courses which also strengthened my writing. I attended law school at The College of William & Mary on a full tuition scholarship and graduated with a 3.6 GPA.

My approach as a tutor is to help students develop the skills to produce excellent written work and to promote their enthusiasm for learning. I am easy going, but know how to keep students motivated and on task. I also enjoy encouraging them to experience pride in their effort and work. I am confident that I can help students become more focused, clear and persuasive writers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated with Honors from Vassar College with a degree in Political Science, I also took many English, History, Philosophy and other courses requiring thorough knowledge of English grammar, usage, and style. I also have a JD from The College of William & Mary and 24 years working as an attorney necessitating extensive writing. My background includes academic, expository, and persuasive writing. As a result of this experience, I have developed a well-rounded vocabulary, accurate grammar, and effective style.

Grammar

My Vassar degree, JD from The College of William & Mary , and 24 years working as an attorney have required extensive writing. During college and law school I worked part-time as a copy editor. As a result my knowledge of the rules of grammar is extremely accurate. In addition, as a supervising attorney, I often review the work of other attorneys and ensure there are no grammatical errors.

Proofreading

My Ivy League education, JD from The College of William & Mary , and 24 years working as an attorney have required extensive writing and proofreading to ensure quality submissions of my work. In addition, as a supervising attorney, I often review the work of other attorneys and ensure there are no errors. Finally, during my college and law school breaks, I worked part-time as a copy-editor for a medical publication.

Vocabulary

My Ivy League education, JD from The College of William & Mary, and 24 years working as an attorney have required extensive writing. My background includes academic, expository, and persuasive writing. As a result of this experience, I have developed a well-rounded vocabulary and the ability to use it effectively in my writing.

Writing

My BA in Political Science from Vassar, JD from The College of William & Mary, and 24 years working as a child advocate and attorney have required extensive writing. I have written instructional materials regarding legislation, case law, court procedure and litigation techniques in my role as a supervisor and legal instructor. As an advocate before the legislature and as an attorney, I have prepared numerous research papers, legislative testimony, and persuasive legal briefs.
