About Stephen

My experience with teaching covers a wide range, with classroom experience from kindergarten to undergraduates in college, and tutoring from middle school to graduate school. My students have consistently reported a positive experience after being taught by me, and I have stayed in touch with several after they have moved on. They sometimes report their successes in future courses or the workforce, or simply tell me that they appreciate what I did for them. This reward is probably the best part of the experience as an educator.

With my experience in both teaching and tutoring, I am hoping to use this forum to reach out to those who otherwise might not know about my availability for tutoring. I plan to assist as many students as I can in their future successes, and hope that I am able to reach many who could use my specialties. I find that math is in high demand, but the biggest need in a technology-based world is a competent teacher for computer science subjects. Such tutors are not as common, so I hope to help with that scarcity.

I have five years of experience teaching math in a classroom, from middle school level up to seniors in high school. I have also tutored students in college level math courses, including calculus, differential equations, and mathematical logic. I have a track record of success, and the students that I have tutored have shown marked improvements in their comprehension and test scores.

I have a Master's degree in computer science and have four years of experience teaching computers at the middle and high school level. I have also taught a college course in computer skills, and while in graduate school I was the TA for several courses, including introductory programming and artificial intelligence. I did research specializing in artificial intelligence while in graduate school, as well. Several of the people that I have tutored have gone on to successful careers in computer science, including a couple who now work for Google.

I can tutor a wide variety of subjects in math and computer science. If you're looking for a friendly, patient person to guide you through difficult subjects, then feel free to contact me. I have flexible hours and can work around most schedules. I hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Engineering

My undergraduate degree is in computer science and engineering. I have experience with digital logic, circuit design, breadboard circuit assembly, and computer architecture. I have used VHDL and Verilog on programmable logic arrays. I have some experience with electrical engineering, from the basics to signals and systems.

Computer Programming

I have experience in several programming languages through obtaining my Master's in computer science. I can program in Java, C, C++, MATLAB, and Visual Basic. I also have some experience with PHP, SQL, C#, CSS, and HTML, as well as vendor-specific languages from educational software used in school administration.

Computer Science

I have a Master's Degree in Computer Science, and can provide a transcript to WyzAnt if requested to confirm this. My specialty is artificial intelligence, but I tutored in every area of computer science while in college, including programming, theory of computation, and algorithms. I can help computer science students in any area where they are having difficulties.

Logic

I have taught math courses in symbolic logic, as well as taken a course on Socratic Logic in philosophy. I can teach and assess the validity or soundness of arguments and analyze fallacies. I have fluency with both predicate and first-order logic, and experience with second-order logic. I can also relate logic to computer science as represented in circuit design with transistors.

Religion

I studied theology in a Catholic seminary, learning about Church History, Scripture, Doctrine, and Christian Morality and Spirituality. I have also taken numerous courses in world religions and Eastern philosophies. I have knowledge of the beliefs, philosophies, and and writings of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and to a lesser degree Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, and Jainism.

Personable and quick.

Stephen spent and hour and a half with my 13 year old son on Algebra I. My son normally does not open up to people when he first meets them. He gets board very quickly and needs a teacher who moves things along at his pace. All I can say is when we got back to the car, my son said, "I really, really, liked working with him"
