About Christopher

I believe in student success and will do all I can to help the student in need of my services as a tutor, so long as the student is willing to provide the effort necessary. I won't do the work for the student, but I will do everything that is within my ability to help encourage success. I can work around anyone's schedule and tutor anyone as long as the student feels my services can be of help. As the NASA motto goes "Failure is not an option" and so that has been in my mission as an educator.

I am a certified Connecticut Teacher with over 10 years experience in classroom management and in school tutoring, so I know how to adjust my approach to helping students who are having difficulty with the material and remain patient and provide assurance that the student does not feel they won't succeed. My certification specialty is in History/Social Studies but I am also skilled in English/Language Arts, and Writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I student taught Modern American History for four months at the college prep and honors level difficulty level. I am also certified by the state of Connecticut to teach American Studies and Civics. I also have a strong background in History and find sharing my knowledge of this subject with students a reward in of itself by helping future generations know about the past.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have substitute taught in grades K through 6, and tutored students in those grades in the concentrations of English/Language Arts, Science, Basic Math and Social Studies/History at my local town's elementary school. My experience in the classroom and tutoring elementary level students has gone on for over a decade, and includes helping students in the classroom who have encountered difficulty learning the subject material and require help with the learning material as well as making sure the students stay focused on task. I am also proficient as a result of my experience substituting and tutoring with students at these grade levels, in terms of time management for instruction and class work, in maintaining an uninterrupted classroom routine and a continued healthy working environment for the students.

Elementary Science

I have substitute taught in grades K through 6, and tutored students in those grades in the concentration of Science at my local town's elementary school. My experience in the classroom and tutoring elementary level students has gone on for over a decade, and includes helping students in the classroom who have encountered difficulty learning the subject material, learning terminology, the scientific process and providing help when required with the learning material as well as making sure the students stay focused on task. I am also proficient as a result of my experience substituting and tutoring with students at these grade levels, in terms of time management for instruction and class work, in maintaining an uninterrupted classroom routine and a continued healthy working environment for the students.

English

As a Teacher and Tutor, I have helped students understand sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. I have also helped students with their language arts to expand their knowledge of the meaning of words and how to phrase them according to how the sentence or assignment is structured and in conversation. My past tutoring experience has been at both the secondary and college level, helping students with paper and reading assignments where in they may have to answer questions based off an essay or book, along with writing a paper if required for the assignment.

European History

As part of my state certification in History/Social Studies I have completed several World and European History courses that cover events and cultures dating back from the stone age all the way to the post cold war era. I have tutored at the college level History to Civilization courses also covering the same time frame. I also keep up with current events going on in Europe and how they reflect on the continents history between various cultural and political differences and how they helped shape the world we live in today.

Geography

I am proficient in map reading, identifying different countries and continents, reading map symbols, and measuring distance. I also keep up to date on current events with the ever changing borders in many countries. I have taken high school and college level courses in geography and geopolitical divisions to meet the requirements of teaching geography in the state of Connecticut.

Government & Politics

As a History/Social Studies at the secondary level, I have taught and tutored students in History and Social Studies classes the functions and different forms/philosophies of Government. I have also taken college political science courses learning the different philosophy of government from democracy to socialism, along with how the American Government functions. In Politics I have instructed students how our nation was setup as a representative democratic republic with the three branches of government and the numerous checks and balances system.

Grammar

In my years as both a student and a teacher, I have found grammar to be key in communication, especially in written assignments. I have worked with students as a fellow student, tutor and teacher in improving their written and oral communication skills in their assignments to better get across what ideas they are trying to convey.

Literature

As a teacher and tutor, I have found literature essential in forming the "human connection" to learning. Works by Shakespeare, George Orwell, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and hundreds of others help students learn more about cultures and people in general. As a teacher I have had my students read extracts from books such as John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men", and Elie Wiesel's "Night" to establish connections for students to the material outside of the textbook. Literature to me also helps students see more to the world than reality TV or Xbox and what can be gained by reading these famous works.

Phonics

I have substitute taught in grades K through 6, and tutored students in those grades in the concentration of word pronunciation at my local town's elementary school. My experience in the classroom and tutoring elementary level students has gone on for over a decade, and includes helping students in the classroom who have encountered difficulty learning the subject material, learning word definitions, pronouncing and reading words and providing help when required with the learning material as well as making sure the students stay focused on task. I am also proficient as a result of my experience substituting and tutoring with students at these grade levels, in terms of time management for instruction and class work, in maintaining an uninterrupted classroom routine and a continued healthy working environment for the students.

Political Science

In my qualifications as a History and Social Studies teacher I am proficient in Political Science. I have taken college level courses on the subject (introduction to politics and global geopolitical divisions to name two) and both taught and tutored the foundations of the different political philosophies, the evolution of government from tribal leaders, to emperors and kings all the way to elected heads of state, I have also found in my experience teaching, that students have many questions about how the country is run, the world around them and how it effects them.

Proofreading

My job title as a teacher and background both as a student and tutor make proofreading essential for all written assignments. I have proof read numerous drafts of papers as a teacher, and helped students look for ways to improve their drafts through corrections to errors and suggestions on ways to "polish" certain sections of their writing. It is also my experience that haste makes waste when it comes to proofreading, and both the teacher/tutor and the student must both look over the work to check for errors.

Psychology

Psychology in my experience as a student and teacher is the process of understand who we are. I have taken several college courses on basic psychology and educational psychology to improve my knowledge base of our own awareness and how teachers and tutors interpret things compared to those of the students. My method in tutoring Psychology is always to point to examples of things rather than learn directly from the book, for example; a textbook can not tell you what makes up the parts of your identity, only you yourself can do that through the events that have shaped your life, what makes you more comfortable or more afraid and so on.

Reading

As both a teacher and tutor, I have helped students better understand and improve their grasp of reading by expanding their vocabulary, learning new ideas from different points of view and master grammar. I have found in almost every subject I have taken, taught and tutored in, reading is a requirement to better understand what is necessary to learn and build upon. In my experience tutoring, I have helped students try to clarify a reading assignment from a book or textbook, and help them understand what is being asked of them and what reading questions they may have to answer as an assessment to prove they have mastered the assignment.

Social Studies

I am certified by the state of Connecticut to teach social studies to grades 7 through 12. My experience tutoring the subject to students, has been in order to help them understand a combination of geography, different cultures, history, and politics as relevant to the subject. Through In depth learning using the textbook, magazines, and video's, I have found these combined strategies successful as a teacher in helping students understand the principles that make up society. My tutoring methods, include helping the student understand the work assigned to them by the teacher, and what is being asked of them and how they may go about completing that assignment, be it homework, a paper or other creative assignment.

Sociology

I have student taught a high school college prep-course titled “Introduction to Sociology.” In this course I covered everything from the philosophers of the science all the way to the makeup of the family and what defines patterns of kinship. I have found in my experience that a combination of research, role play and textbook learning are essential for students to understand the subject by being active learners.

Spelling

I have substitute taught in grades K through 6, and tutored students in those grades at my local town's elementary school.

Study Skills

I have substitute taught in grades K through 12, and tutored students in those grades in the concentrations of English/Language Arts, Science, Basic Math and Social Studies/History at my local town's elementary, middle and high schools. My experience in the classroom and tutoring at these grade level students has gone on for over a decade, and includes helping students in the classroom who have encountered difficulty learning the subject material and require help with the learning material as well as making sure the students stay focused on task. I am also proficient as a result of my experience substituting and tutoring with students at these grade levels. I have helped students with their study skills through taking notes and putting the material in their own words, focusing on main ideas/topics and supporting facts, time management, memorization through study with a buddy, and using visual or verbal cues to help with memory.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is essential to writing and communicating. As a teacher I am proficient in helping students master their oral and written communication skills. In Writing I have found it key to help students practice reading, speaking and writing words they are learning and telling their differences such as if the word is a noun or verb.

World History

As a Connecticut Teacher in History and Social Studies, I am certified to teach and tutor in World History. I am proficient in my knowledge of cultures from antiquity that are taught in school such as the Mesopotamian's, Egyptians, Ancient Greek's and Romans, Middle Ages, Renaissance to the Age of Exploration. I also have furthered my studies beyond what most American Education focuses on and am very knowledgeable in the History of Many European, South American, Middle Eastern and Asian Countries and their respective cultures.

Writing

Writing is essential to education no matter in what field of study a student is learning. In my experience tutoring and teaching I have students write in order to make persuasive arguments supported by expository facts to improve their written communication skills in preparing them for life after school. Time and effort are critical in my experience to helping the student go over each draft of their writing assignment and make improvements as well as proofread for errors so they don't get marked down, this does not mean I do the work for them but in order to help them learn to become self-reliant in their writing abilities as they get older.
