About Katie

Hi there! My name is Katie C. and I'm currently majoring in English and Secondary Education at Eastern Connecticut State University. Basically, I'm working on becoming a high school English teacher. I prefer to work with students in grades seven to twelve, as that's what I want to teach, but I can work with younger students as well.

I'm not technically an honors student, but I've gotten on my school's Dean's List twice and my GPA has never dropped below a 3.2 (except for my first semester freshman year when it was a 2.7. I had a rough time adjusting to college).

I just finished my sophomore year in college and have already been a teaching assistant for one upper-level college class. I looked over homework before the professor put a grade on it, I tutored some of the students in the class, held office hours, and worked on grading major research papers. I've also led the class in a few short lessons.

As for me as a person, I'm very passionate about English, literature, humor, and animals. I think students can learn more easily with humor and I just like to laugh in general. As for animals, I own four cats, a dog, and a horse, but I don't live on a farm. I do live near several small ones though!
I do not have a favorite book, but I do like several different genres. Fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and adapted fairy tales are my favorites.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I just finished my second year at Eastern Connecticut State University. My major is English and I'm just starting my other major of Secondary Education. I feel I am able to tutor this subject because I have experience writing papers, editing, proofreading, and just with general "English stuff."

Grammar

As with my other subject qualifications, I'm an English major and have been a teaching assistant for a college English class. I've worked with grammar all my life, and though it is sometimes shoddy with my vernacular, I'm capable of writing sentences.

Literature

This subject is essentially what my future career will be all about - literature and writing. I know multiple literary theories and how to analyze and deconstruct stories. My favorites are by Shakespeare.
I know symbolism, metaphor, feminist theory, psychoanalytic theory, etc.

Proofreading

As I mentioned with my other subjects, I'm going into my third year as an English major. Even before I entered college or thought about my major, friends would ask me to proofread papers. I've proofread a friend's grant proposals before she submitted them and a few were accepted.

Sewing

I have experience working with patterns, sewing buttons and zippers, I've used a serger, I've sewed both knit (stretchy) and non-knit (not-stretchy) fabrics, I can take measurements and adjust the pattern accordingly, and I can do an invisible hem.

I can make clothes/accessories and I have experience quilting.

I started out making clothes for my barbies and stuffed animals, making purses, making accessories, and eventually went on to take sewing classes in high school. I made both my prom dresses. One was with a pattern and traditional material (I adjusted the pattern to take parts of three dresses and make it into one). The other dress, which became my WISE project Senior year, was made entirely out of T-shirts. I designed, sewed, dyed, and embellished the entire thing. I also made my own corsage, boutonniere for my date, accessories for my friends, and my own hair accessories. I'm pretty much an expert on all things prom.

Writing

This subject description will be similar to my literature subject description. As mentioned, I'm an English major and writing papers is pretty much all I do, aside from reading and researching. I know how to write a proper research paper, literary analysis, lab report, and use different literary theories. The theories I'm strongest with are feminist and psychoanalytic theories, but I do know a bit about deconstructionist theory.
I also work with fiction writing and narrative. I've taken several creative writing classes and have grown and excelled at each of them.

I know a bit about poetry as well. I'm not a huge fan, but if you're struggling with a poetry unit in school, I can help out.
