About Lisa

I am a certified teacher in Connecticut teaching students at the elementary level in Special Education. I am very passionate about teaching, especially within the area of reading. I have experience using the Wilson Reading Systems program and the Orton-Gillingham approach. I also am familiar with the Math in Focus program.

I studied at the University of Connecticut and graduated from the Neag School of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and a Master of Arts in Education Psychology with a specialization in literacy. Throughout their program, I had extensive experiences teaching students in elementary school in Glastonbury and Windham. Within this time, I worked with the Connecticut K-3 Literacy Initiative providing reading intervention to students requiring Tier 3 interventions in grades K-3. In addition, I tutored students in grades K-12 with and without special needs privately and through Project Academic Advancement.

I look forward to helping more students become confident in their abilities and to develop a love of learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have received my 165-SPECIAL EDUCATION: COMPREHENSIVE, GRADES K THROUGH 12 Certification through the state of Connecticut. Prior to my certification, I graduated from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor's of Science in Special Education and a Master's of Arts in Educational Psychology. During my coursework, I studied behavior strategies to help students who struggle with attention to maintain focus and remain motivated.

Throughout my teaching, I have taught students with ADD/ADHD strategies to help them stay on-task, follow directions, maintain control of their bodies, and complete their work. In addition, I have taught them self-monitoring and organizational skills.
