I am a Certified Elementary Teacher with over 10 years of classroom experience. I have the ability to differentiate instruction for different learning styles. I was trained by the Reading & Writing Project Project at Teacher's College at Columbia University in New York, NY.
One of my goals of tutoring children is to meet each child where they are academically and support, encourage and motivate them to his/her full potential. This challenging task is full of excitement, wonder, and joy. I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning, if they have the proper motivation and guidance from their teachers. As an experienced teacher I need to provide an engaging and interesting environment that promotes curiosity and a love of learning. It is also my responsibility to see that my students are advancing as learners for the rigors of the Common Core Standards and middle and high school.
My teaching experience from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade makes me able to instruct students who are learning about phonemic awareness through proficient and independent readers. As a capable instructor, I am able to assess each child's weaknesses through a reading inventory, interpret needs, and plan instruction accordingly.
As an educator, there are many positive initiatives related to the Common Core. In math, students are taught multiple ways to solve problems, including some very visual methods, and this should help reach more types of learners. Common Core math also attempts to get kids to understand and work with numbers not as abstract concepts but as representations of units. In language arts, students are asked to use details in the text to support their answer—making them stronger writers and readers. Overall, the Common Core encourages kids to demonstrate their thinking, which I believe is essential for lifelong learners.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
