Eastern Connecticut State University (History)
Hello, my name Sonya.
I am currently a student at Eastern Connecticut State University, where I am majoring in History and Asian Studies. I have always enjoyed helping and teaching others; for the past 7 years I have taught many adults and children how to ballroom dance, and last year assisted a kindergarten class in math, reading, and art activities. During the summer, I work with children ages 5 to 12 in groups to enhance their social and creative abilities. In the after-school program, the staff leads, science experiments, field trips, themed days, and art projects also, I have lead the group in yoga, and line dancing.
In addition to the after school program, with the start of the new year, I will be joining the JumpStart program with AmeraCoorps as a Team Leader. This program works with preschool school children who may struggling with school related activities, and prepares them for kindergarden.
When I comes to teaching or tutoring adults and children, I understand the challenges and frustrations that a person may face. It has been my experience that a good instructor should have the ability to explain the subject 50 or more different ways. This type of style I am very familiar with, not only can I explain and re-explain but, I can also adapt very quickly to the person I am instructing to. I believe in visual ads, movement and theory as part of my teaching style. I encourage feed back, and expect questions whenever possible, I only ask for a 24-hour notice to cancel any sessions.
I look forward to working with you,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching ballroom dancing for the past seven years. I am Full Bronze certified from Arthur Murray dance studio, and have been trained in over 28 dances, both competitive and social styles.
Awards: 2008 Tournament of Champions recipient, 2009 Rising Star Female award, 2010 Top 20 teacher award, Dance Sport, 2010 Top Associate Bronze winner Superrama.
