About Mitch

I graduated from Connecticut College this past May with a degree in English. I expect to begin medical school in the summer of 2017. In the meantime, I look forward to using the wide academic experience I gained during my liberal arts education to help students achieve success in math, science, and the humanities. Tutoring is a pleasure for me, and I have helped many students achieve success in my two years of experience.

Chemistry is at the center of the pre-medical curriculum. In addition to my study, I have helped a number of students in general chemistry at the high school, AP, and college level. I emphasize a thorough understanding of and experience with practice problems. I also help students to develop a detailed sense of how concepts relate to real-world situations, making a difficult subject less abstract.

My degree is in English, and I have two years of experience tutoring writing, research, and literature skills. I have worked with students at the high school and college level, including students with learning disabilities.

High school math--algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, precalculus--make up my most popular subjects. With my experience tutoring class material and SAT/ACT prep, I have learned to adapt the same material to the needs of different students.

I think that the main virtue of tutoring over classroom teaching is the opportunity to work one-on-one. Most students benefit from the individual attention, and for some (myself included) it is essential. My goal in tutoring is to bring the student to a point where she doesn't need me anymore, where she feels confident not only with a particular body of content, but with her own ability to learn. For each student, this means something different, and I look forward to helping you find what you need to reach this level of confidence and independence.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My degree is in English, as is my current graduate work. As an undergraduate major I earned straight A's in my courses and won academic awards for my writing. I have formally tutored English at the university and high school level, and I always have friends coming to me to read their essays.

German

I have studied German for over two years (including a summer in Germany) and have tutored it at all levels. I have an advanced proficiency in all aspects of the language, as well as extensive experience in everyday and professional conversation.
