About Jan

I started teaching other students how to draw and color when I was in the 4th grade. By the time I was inn 9th grade I was taking my own lessons from a professional artist. And when I went to college I knew I had to do sculpture. Some years down the road I set up an organization of CT Sculptors that still is active today. For the past several years I have switched to painting in acrylics and watercolors. I sometimes use reference photographs that I have taken and sometimes I paint what the photo shows. I especially love creating small 5"x7" mini paintings. Some have taken awards in regional art shows.

I have worked for the cities of Wethersfield and West Hartford as an art teacher for adult education over a period of years. I have since moved from those cities and now reside in Norwich, CT. I was a sabbatical replacement for the former Professor Lloyd Glass on at the University of Hartford Art School approximately 10 years ago.

I work with my students to find out what really excites them and ask them to paint that. I think that you can also learn to decide what excites you and even change your mind over time. I was once known mostly as a figurative artist and I worked in both clay and watercolor and frequently charcoal. Now my passion is painting water.

I believe that everyone can draw and it is important to allow the gift to grow organically by focusing time and effort on drawing. I love to incorporate the works of living and dead masters just to give my students a feeling for possibilities. I think when we become our own authorities it is easy to get boxed into a rut. So I advocate experimentation and interpretation with concrete approaches used by masters over the millennia.

I encourage you to take up the challenge and delight that arise when you become "in control" of your own painting, drawing or sculpture. I advocate for experimentation too be a use some of the greatest artists used those things as tools. I welcome you out to enjoy the adventure!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have worked for the cities of Wethersfield and West Hartford as an art teacher for adult education over a period of years. I have since moved from those cities and now reside in Norwich, CT. I was a sabbatical replacement for the former Professor Lloyd Glass on at the University of Hartford Art School approximately 10 years ago.
I teach both the drawing basics and encourage my students to find and make their own marks in their own ways. I encourage experimentation because that is so often the basis of an ah-ha! moment. I still draw as well as paint for the pure joy of it!
I can also submit samples of my own work.

Painting

I am an award-winning painter of realistic based paintings. My works have taken numerous prizes over the years in local and regional shows. My sculpture (which required my expertise as both a painter and draw-er) took national awards.
I have given up the sculpting because as I have aged I have found it too physically challenging to do, but am an avid painter of mostly small works currently part of my "water series." I am grounded in color theory and composition and like to push those envelopes a bit in each work I create. When I teach painting, I begin with a foundation course in color and composition. I require that my students can draw. And I encourage them to find what and how they love to paint so that it begins or supports a lifetime adventure for them.
