About Ross

We are natural learners, and given responsibility for ourselves, education will come naturally. We take in our surroundings, evaluate them, and analyze the world around us. We are naturally curious and thus, learning need not be forced. But this does not mean we all learn the same way. As a tutor and a teacher, I am ever mindful that our learning styles are as different as our personalities. As a result, I tailor the learning experience of each tutee to his or her learning style. This removes a barrier to education sometimes found in the classroom. In addition to this awareness, I have significant experience, as student, researcher, tutor and teacher, in the Classics.

After graduating summa cum laude from Skidmore College in Classics, I spent three years editing an Ancient Greek-English lexicon as a Junior Harvard Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. This was followed by a year at Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts in Washington, DC where I taught Latin 1 to 73 9th grade students, accommodating the Individualized Education Plans of 16 students. I am now at Pierrepont School in Westport, CT, where I am teaching all levels of Latin as well as an intermediate Greek course. Additionally, in high school, I tutored and helped coach a basketball camp and, in college, I tutored students in Latin and Greek.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I graduated summa cum laude from Skidmore College in Classics. Further, I received both departmental and college-wide honors in academics.

After graduating, I worked three years for Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies on an English-Ancient Greek lexicon project. While there, I presented a paper with an original theory about Jason's leadership in Apollonius' Argonautica. The paper will be published in the proceedings of the Groningen Workshop on Hellenistic Poetry within the next year. This was followed by a year teaching Latin in Washington, DC and I am now about to begin another year teaching Latin as well as Ancient Greek.
