About Paul

Teaching has been a lifelong passion and vocation. I've taught students professionally and as a volunteer for over twenty five years, even when working full time in other fields. My parents were both educators and I was employed during high school and college teaching test prep classes in NYC. After graduating early from high school, I spent six months teaching at-risk elementary school students before starting my own college experience. From 1994 until 2002 I tutored underprivileged children in the Boston area while employed as a management consultant and investment banker.

From 2002-2008 I went to graduate school at the University of California and worked as a writing tutor, teaching assistant, and lecturer in the Politics department. My scores and ratings were exemplary and I received the university's highest teaching commendation, awarded to only three instructors a year. During this time period I spent my summers volunteering with the Soros Foundation in eastern Europe. Overseas, I taught political theory, economics, and public speaking to gifted young men and women from post-communist nations.

My undergraduate degree is in English. While I retain a love for literary fiction, like most people I will never pen a novel. But strong reading and writing skills are essential to business success and maintaining vibrant friendships. Mastering English demands the ability to communicate in a variety of styles (descriptive, direct, narrative) and mediums (reading, essay writing, public speaking, short response.)

My graduate degrees are in Politics and Government. The core skills of social science and history are weighing evidence and building arguments. I approach topics as puzzles to be solved with the students. Tutoring aims to solve the immediate problems a pupil faces in a subject, and give them the tools to address future challenges on their own.

No matter what subject is being taught, I try to ignite a love of books and learning in my student. (I should also confess being an unrepentant bookworm, with several thousand volumes of my library stashed in storage units on both coasts.)

I look forward to chatting about your educational challenges and how we can tackle them together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I spent several years teaching at the University of California. I've advised dozens of students on their undergraduate and graduate school application essays. Following several years doing volunteer educational work in Eastern Europe, I mentored a number of students from less developed countries who successfully earned scholarships to US and UK universities. I have also served as interviewer for college admissions and the awarding of scholarship funds.

Political Science

I had an undergraduate major at Williams College in Political Science, MA and PhD(ABD) from UC-Santa Cruz in Politics. I was a TA and then Lecturer in Politics and Legal Studies Department at UCSC for six years. I taught political theory, political economy, comparative politics, and US government, and also taught the senior capstone course for majors.

Public Speaking

I've been active as a public speaker for over thirty years. As a high-school student I twice won the New York State Championship in Extemporaneous Speaking. Years later, while teaching at the University of California, my lectures were recognized with a teaching award. From 2003-2006 I worked for the Soros Foundation teaching politics, public speaking and debate to students from new democracies in Eastern Europe.

Series 63

I served as a VP of Strategy at Liberty Funds, a multiple manager mutual fund company with over 100 billion under management. I also ran independent brokerage research for Cerulli Associates, a consulting firm focused on investment managers and financial advisers. I held a Series 6, 63 and 7, during these jobs.

After leaving finance I taught political economy at the University of California and have strong teaching skills in addition to subject specific knowledge.
