Manchester community college (General Music Studies)
I am a music teacher. My love of music came from an early age and first picked up the guitar at age 3. I am currently in my fourth semester at Manchester Community College studying music and hope to complete my Associates Degree and transfer to a four year college to continue my studies. I have been fortunate to always have great teachers in my life to help me with my musical development. While attending North Branford High School I studied music theory with Michael Carnaroli. At MCC I have studied music history with Carolina Flores and music theory with Dr. Warner. I have studied jazz guitar with Neal Fitzpatrick (who was a student of the legendary jazz guitarist Sal Salvador) and general jazz studies with saxophonist Stephanie Wattel at MCC. It is the passion that these teachers have shown that has inspired me start teaching others.
I play and teach many different styles of music including but not limited to-rock, heavy metal, jazz, blues, country, funk, acoustic, and pop music. In addition to guitar studies I can teach students about the history of music, the theory of why music sounds the way it does, and the process of composition/songwriting.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied some of the great composers of all time including Bach and Beethoven. I have also studied compositions from many different time periods such as the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Eras. In addition to studying them I have analyzed them using music theory to determine why the compositions sound the way that they do and what techniques the composer has used.
I have been playing seriously since my early days in high school. I have studied jazz guitar extensively with Classical/Jazz guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick. Mr. Fitzpatrick has a bachelors degree from The Hartt School of Music and a Masters degree from Yale University in music studies. I have also had the privilege of taking private lessons with the great Pat Russo, who has been teaching for over 25 years and has played guitar for over 30 years. Pat specializes in advanced rock guitar and songwriting. I play a wide variety of styles including rock, heavy metal, jazz, blues, funk, country, acoustic, and pop.
I have taken many music history and appreciation classes at Manchester Community College with Dr. Carolina Flores. In these classes I learned about the lives of the most important musicians and composers in history. I studied music from the Middle Ages all the way up to the 20th century. I also learned about why music was important from each era and what role it played in society during the time. In addition to this, I studied why certain composers wrote some of their most famous pieces and how it affected music that came after them.
I have been studying music theory for many years now. I took a music theory course with Michael Carnaroli at North Branford High School, another with Carolina Flores at MCC, and a harmony course with Dr. Warner at MCC. In addition, I have been studying music theory on my own for a year now after taking as many as my schools would allow. I believe that it is not only important to learn how much works through learning theory but also important to learn how to apply it.
I have been a songwriter for many years now and have written in many different styles such as rock, pop, jazz, and blues. I took a songwriting class with North Branford High School teacher and songwriter Michael Carnaroli when I was 18. I play in three different musical groups that feature original music written/co-written by me (Selmquist, Headspace, and the Kaylea and Carissa group).
