I am an enthusiastic life-long learner who is committed to helping students be the best individual learner they can be. Whether it is supporting a student and his/her parents through a rigorous academic course load, advocating as a resource for IEPs and 504 plans, or helping a family to develop strong study and organizational skills, my 30 years of experience in private tutoring as well as 19 years as a parent of three very different learners will make a difference! I take the school nagging out of your parenting with fun and rewarding tutoring for your student!
I am available to meet with parents, teachers, administrators as needed and have an individually-tailored structure which serves to benefit each student. My experiences range from teaching at-risk kindergarten and currently elementary and middle school students in New London to write and read, to guiding high school seniors in the college app and financial aid process including essay writing and standardized test prep in reading and writing. My most recent contract position was as a writing mentor at the United States Coast Guard Academy where I assisted cadets at all levels with writing assignments in all courses. I also taught SAT Verbal prep at the Chinese school here in East Lyme. I meet students individually and in small groups at libraries in Old Saybrook, Middletown, Norwich, Mansfield, and Mystic as well as private homes within 20 miles of 06357. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a writing mentor at the USCGA and a reading tutor in a charter middle school.
I'm an experienced professional reading writing teacher. I teach at Three Rivers CC, and have taught SAT verbal prep at the southeastern Connecticut Chinese school. I have excellent references and flexibility. Let's talk!
As the mother of a son diagnosed with ADHD-Pi in 5th grade, and having struggled through the failure of several medications and a school system overwhelmed with special needs students' responsibilities, I took it upon myself to educate my family and my son's teachers on his executive dysfunction challenges and help him develop coping mechanisms and study skills as well as self-advocacy leading to his successful completion of high school. As a result, I have tutored other students with ADD/ADHD and supported the families and the schools with these students. First-hand experience and a relationship with a prominent pediatrician who specializes in ADD/ADHD has afforded me knowledge which I share with my students.
I have a Master in Business Administration from the University of Hartford. My focus was on Organizational Development and Marketing. I have more than 13 years' experience in privately-held businesses from 3 to 400+ employees and have headed human resources as well as served on strategy and marketing teams.
I am a Literacy Support Specialist in a charter middle school. My experience with K-6 students also is as a volunteer in the classrooms of all three of my children. I have a letter of recommendation from the school principal. I co-taught elementary school (3rd grade) science and have guest lectured at our middle school as well. I provide reading, writing and study skill support to classrooms and have dozens of children in my client list who are now reading, writing, and speaking with confidence in their grade level classrooms.
My experience tutoring goes back 30 years to my certificate earned at the University of Vermont. I have experience co-teaching an elementary science class at Niantic Center School and vast experience tutoring reading and writing.
My MBA is in Marketing and Organizational Development. I spent 3 years helping a principal build his business from 40 employees to 400 in 18 months and then marketing it's products to consumers nationwide. I additionally had a team of over 100 reps delivering educational toys to families via direct sales and multi-level marketing channels with Discovery Toys. Last but not least, I founded and published a full-color consumer niche magazine for 4 years, working closely with my creative director and dozens of writers and photographers to deliver a beautiful, interesting and compelling product every other month selling 100% of the advertising and subscriptions personally. I am well-versed in Harvard Business School strategy for case analysis as well.
I have used MS Outlook as my primary email, calendar and task manager since its inception. I am familiar with it as a personal organizational tool as well as a business tool. I feel comfortable teaching anyone how to use it and make the most of its features.
I founded and published a full-color consumer niche magazine for 4 years, working closely with my creative director and dozens of writers and photographers to deliver a beautiful, interesting and compelling product every other month. I used MS Publisher regularly and continue to produce programs and collateral for non-profit groups using it as well.
I served as an instructor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a Bridge program for at-risk cadets. I also supported, critiqued and evaluated cadets at all levels on their presentation and public speaking. Writing and reading instruction constitute about 2/3 of my role there, but the ability to think quickly, communicate clearly and effectively to superiors and subordinates and even to address the press or other government groups during a crisis is critical to their training. We spent a lot of time working 1:1 and in small groups to practice and also prepared the best candidates for an annual competition which required an oral presentation to adjudicators and officers and guests.
My background in Sociology is largely from coursework at UCONN which was credited towards my Bachelor of General Studies degree. I had an A average in all of the sociology courses I took, and considered a Master's in Social Work before deciding to go to business school. Sociology coursework is largely based on reading and writing assignments and intuitive thinking, all of which I excel at and can use to support students in their learning styles.
