About Tara

I am a graduate student at Yale studying biochemistry. I have been a teaching assistant for two different classes here - one broad introductory class for new students and one in depth technical class for advanced students - so I have experience teaching biology and biochemistry at all levels.

I worked closely with some of the world-famous professors here at Yale to develop effective teaching strategies for our students. I have been tutoring biology for a long time, however, starting at the beginning of college where I conducted an after school biology program for middle school students in the St. Louis area.

I am also fluent in Hebrew after living in Northern Israel for a year, tutoring students of all ages in English and Science. Working with the language barrier was a new challenge that I learned to deal with, and my experience with different age groups is especially valuable because different ages experience language very differently.

I am currently in my 4th year of a PhD program at Yale University in the department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. I study transcription and splicing using next-generation sequencing methods and computational analysis of large data sets. My training has specialized in teaching me how to teach myself. Often the questions I have are unknown not only to me, but to everybody, and it is up to me to figure out how to answer those questions and teach myself new concepts along the way.

I have taken 2 years of formal Hebrew classes in my university. Additionally, I spent a year abroad in Israel where I greatly improved my conversational fluency and have since visited Israel 8 more times, improving my speaking skills each time. I also remain in touch with friends I have there, and we communicate in Hebrew via skype, calls, and texting.

I am a native English speaker and spent a year abroad teaching English to students across all levels.

I am friendly and eager to help you improve in a subject I have some knowledge in! Learning is such a fundamental part of my happiness, and I hope to share that with you! I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have about my qualifications, so please reach out and ask away!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hebrew

I have had two years of college classes in Hebrew vocabulary and grammar in addition to living in Israel for one year and speaking Hebrew on a daily basis. I have saved many of the lessons used in my original college classes that include both book work exercises and oral assignments that I will use to tutor students. I have used these lessons with several students that I have tutored for about one year very successfully.
