About Carolina

Writing and editing aid across disciplines for high school students in the greater New Haven and Hartford areas.

Expertise in:
• SAT/undergraduate college application essays
• Argumentative/persuasive paper writing and editing
• Technical writing/proposals (especially in the fields of economics and business)

Credentials:
• Cornell University graduate
• Double major in English and philosophy
• Winner of two essay competitions at Cornell:
1. George Harmon Coxe Award in American Literature (English Department)
2. Goethe Essay Prize (Department of German Studies)
• Highly trained writing tutor at Cornell's Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines since 2013 (paid)
• 800 SAT Writing Section score
• Trilingual (English, Spanish, French)

Typically, sessions start by reading and/or discussing a writing assignment or project, evaluating research material, and brainstorming an outline. Special attention is given to developing ways to shape coherent arguments, make strong use of evidence, and work with appropriate citation conventions. Questions about depth of analysis, organization, thesis definition, audience expectations, paragraph development, stylistics, or sentence structure are also addressed at length. Support is provided to both native and non-native speakers of English to identify patterns among grammatical and/or syntactic errors and to develop effective strategies for the student's own line-editing. Finally, we deal with issues of confidence and aptitude by cultivating critical reading, analytic thought, imagination, and attention to time constraints.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
