“If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.” -- Albert Einstein

I base my tutoring style off of this simple idea: my job as a tutor is not done until my student truly understands the material. I use a modified Socratic method-style of teaching to challenge my students to gain an intuition about the subjects we cover that will allow the application of critical thinking with this intuition to excel in coursework.

I base my tutoring style off of this simple idea: my job as a tutor is not done until my student truly understands the material. I use a modified Socratic method-style of teaching to challenge my students to gain an intuition about the subjects we cover that will allow the application of critical thinking with this intuition to excel in coursework.

My name is Danielle Miyagishima and I'm obtaining my MD and PhD at Yale School of Medicine on a fully funded scholarship. This allows me to study at Yale for 8 years to obtain a PhD in Genetics and I hope to specialize in Neurosurgery after my training. Originally from New Mexico, I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Biology with minors in biochemistry and chemistry from New Mexico State University. During my undergraduate, I did internships at Cornell and Harvard to study Neuroscience. I went on to apply to medical school and was accepted to many join-degree programs with full-tuition and stipend support at institutions such as Yale, Cornell, Northwestern, Case Western and others.

I attribute much of my success to working very hard. Especially because I have personally had to cope with learning difficulties that afflict many of my students: dyslexia and ADHD. This has allowed me to learn how to break apart complicated material into smaller, logically consistent pieces that I can then apply to new material. My objective as a tutor is to help my students learn to do the same, by whatever method helps them most.

I have been tutoring for over 5 years in organic chemistry, general chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and math. I strongly believe it is my responsibility as a tutor to ensure that my students feel comfortable telling me when they don't understand my explanation or the subject and commit to trying new ways of delivering the information until my student understands. I work hard to customize my student's experience: from custom recorded animations, to custom worksheets or identifying testing strategies.

I look forward to working with you and/or your child!

Knowledgeable and patient.

Danielle tutored me throughout my organic chemistry 1 summer class. I was accidentally put in this class without the proper pre-reqs and was unable to get a refund. I figured I'd make the best of it and get a tutor. I ended up with B+'s and A's, on all my exams, thanks to Danielle. She is extremely patient and bright, always taking the time to explain things I didn't understand. I would not have passed this class without her help. I highly recommend her.

Very helpful and knowledgeable.

Danielle helped me with organic chemistry 1 and she is an excellent tutor. One of the best qualities of Danielle is how understanding she is and how comforting she is especially when you don't understand something the first time around. She walks you through everything step by step and even gives great memorization tactics that helped her when she was taking the course herself. Its great to have tutor that is is so understanding, level headed, and intelligent. I highly recommend her.

Great explanations and knowledgeable!

Worked out nomenclature problems, and helped me understand rules/exceptions etc. Explained a lot of confusing concepts for me and made it more clearly for me to understand.
