I started tutoring in high school when my cousin, who is like a brother to me, was struggling to pass Algebra II and, thus, was at risk of not graduating. In college I began volunteering with students in inner city schools in urban Los Angeles. This was a great challenge because the students do not get a great amount of attention from instructors, which was not the case with my previous students. Furthermore, although the students spoke English well, I often had to discuss their aptitude, strengths, weaknesses, following up, and other information in Spanish with the parents. I learned a great deal about our education system and its inequality during those sessions. I learned that every student is different, and I learned several methods by which to attack their weaknesses and promote confidence in their abilities.
Later, after transferring to North Carolina, I began more formal education training and continued tutoring. Again, I saw students with different backgrounds and varying abilities. I taught as a student teacher at Riverside High School in Durham, NC. My class was full of seniors, only a few years younger than I, who needed to pass the class to graduate. The experience was very fulfilling and enlightening. During that time I also tutored advanced students at another high school who were within weeks of taking the SAT and applying to college.
Throughout my college career I have informally tutored many colleagues in math, science, logic, MCAT prep, and geography. My tutoring has often produced success in those subjects.
Until now, I have never been compensated for my tutoring; I have done it simply because I enjoy it. I love the feeling that I can help someone succeed, and I am good at it. I can talk to anyone and I can help anyone. I started tutoring in high school when my cousin, who is like a brother to me, was struggling to pass Algebra II and, thus, was at risk of not graduating. My cancellation fee is an assessment of 1 hour of tutoring or 1/2 of the scheduled session, whichever is longer, if the session is cancelled within 24 hours of the start time.
I Really do think Patrick is the best Tutor out there. He is extremely knowledgeable and makes math interesting for me. Patrick is kind, patient, and I really like working with him. He explains math to me in a way that is easy to understand and in a way that I can remember it. Every session we get a lot accomplished and lay down the foundation for the next lesson. Patrick always comes on time and prepared for the days lesson. He is also very encouraging and is helping me do better in math. So if you are looking for the best tutor in town, you have found him.
Very accommodating to our schedule, reviewed material before our meeting. Student describes session as "Inspiring. He knows how to make a difficult subject easier."
Although my brother had only one class with Patrick, he was very happy with him and the class was comfortable and enjoyable.
Patrick worked with my son throughout the year on AP Chem and Honors Pre-Calculus. He was always pleasant, professional, and very helpful. He is knowledgeable in these subjects and helped my son to understand the material. If we need a tutor next year, we won't hesitate to call on Patrick.
Patrick really connects with our son and was willing to go the extra mile to help him get ready for a couple of upcoming tests. He squeezed in a second session for our son and did a lot of catch up work with him to get him ready. He is patient but has high standards, a perfect combination for a great tutor.
Patrick was patient with our son who is struggling in Algebra II. He helped him get a lot of his work completed and helped him understand the math so much more!
Patrick is very patient and kind. He explains things carefully and keeps the student on track! He is always available for quick questions through text or video call outside tutoring time. He really knows how to adapt to each student's learning style.
Patrick helped my daughter with her Chemistry homework and labs too. He helped her get through a lot of work and reduced her stress level greatly. Mine too!
Patrick is very patient and focuses on understanding concepts rather than just a given math problem. My son's grades in Geometry have moved up from 74-78 to 94-98. My son much prefers Patrick as his tutor than me. And so do I!
We've had Patrick tutoring our son for about two months now. Since then, our son has had three straignt A's on his Algebra exams and has received an A in the class. Patrick really ensures that our son thoroughly understands the material. He doesn't take any shortcuts and really questions our son's understanding.
We highly recommend Patrick. He's very responsible and flexible to our son's needs.
I am very pleased with Patrick and his ability to tutor conversational Spanish to my son. He covered a rather enormous lesson very thoroughly and I am happy to report my son received an "A" (38 OUT OF 40) on his Spanish exam the following day! Thank you Patrick. We will definitely be using your expertise in the future!!!
Patrick is always on time and responsive to all our requests. He knows the subject well and teaches in the easy way for my daughter to understand. My daughter likes his teaching and shows more confidence in the subjects (math & chemistry).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in theoretical mathematics, which uses logic as its backbone. As a result, I took several courses in logic as part of my degree and had to be extremely fluent in its content (both theory and syntax) to complete my degree. Finally, I have tutored in the subject many times. The subject is second nature to me, applicable many times in real life, and I bring this attitude to my sessions with students.
The SAT Math section has some straightforward multiple choice problems and some free response problems that need to be bubbled in. However, it also has word problems that can be tricky to translate into mathematical language. I have found that these are the most difficult to improve upon. Luckily, they are my specialty. I am an expert at seeing these kinds of problems from many different angles, and my students have benefited greatly.
