University of Montana (Elementary education)
I am a certified K-6 teacher that also holds a coaching certificate. I graduated from the University of Montana in 1999 and did a graduate fellowship at Saint Joseph College in West Hartford working with students on their basic skills in reading and writing. I have been a substitute teacher, camp counselor and para-educator. I have been a reading and writing tutor in the Simsbury and Canton school districts. I have also taught at the high school level getting students ready to take the CAPT Science test.
I currently work in the Special Education field and tutor after school in Canton. I work in the school setting on a daily basis so I have a great understanding of the expectations and skills needed to succeed and have access to materials to use for lessons. My approach to tutoring is to get to know my student outside of their academic life and build a rapport. I expect my students to work hard and give me their undivided attention. They should also expect to take risks, ask questions and try their best. I have the same expectations when I coach sports. I have been a track and field coach for 8 years at Canton Middle School. I also coach soccer in the fall. I am a creative, encouraging and organized teacher. I like to find alternate ways for my students to understand a concept or subject. Whatever we are working on needs to make sense in their world outside of school too. I think my most important quality is my role as a mom. The expectations and nurturing instincts provide me with a great understanding of the bridge between school and home. I am a certified K-6 teacher that also holds a coaching certificate. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am a certified teacher. I have taught handwriting to younger children, and was taught cursive and calligraphy when I was a student. I love to write and have very neat handwriting myself, so teaching it is fun for me.
