Private Math, Physics, Statistics Tutoring on ALL LEVELS!

Promise to show “beyond the cookbook” solutions for any problem --- real understanding is the key!

While “cookbook methods” will work on some sample problems, they will not work on real tests!

My real specialty is Advanced Statistics, but I also specialize in pretty much all other areas in Math, Physics and Statistics: Algebra, Calculus, Geometry as well as more advanced areas (like Linear Algebra, Multivariate Calculus, etc.).

In Physics, my specialties include all the areas of AP Physics: Projectile Motion, Newton's Laws, Conservation of Energy, Electricity and Magnetism, Oscillations Equations, Waves, Optics, etc.

In Statistics, we cover Discrete and Continuous distribution, Sampling Distributions (including Confidence Intervals), Null Hypothesis testing, etc.

Here is a nice example of a problem which does not require any advanced math, but still just as interesting:
find: S = 1+ 2 + 3 + … 998 + 999 + 1000?

Solution is replace all the additions with ONE MULTIPLICATION!

My approach is to ensure that the student really understands the subject matter. It's always better to go slow so that the student is not overwhelmed by too much new material. It's also great when a particular problem can be analyzed in a number of different ways which will "converge" on the same answer. In addition, I like to assign some of my own homework which will hopefully make student think about some of the concepts in a "deeper way". I also really like and try to emulate the approach of Gilbert Strang from MIT (great professor of Linear Algebra). His approach is to ask the right questions and guide students towards the logical answers.

Actuarial Science,

#### Actuarial Science

I am an experienced actuarial science instruction with a master's degree in Financial Math and certification from SOA. Probability distributions, conditional probabilities, expectations, moment generating functions; we cover it all...
Microsoft Excel

MATLAB,

#### MATLAB

I've been using Matlab for over eight years since I started my master's degree in financial math at University of Chicago. Since then, I've done numerous projects in Matlab both academically and professionally while working as a Desk Quant at Hedge Funds. In many ways, properly using and understanding Matlab parallels my knowledge of linear algebra. Once one understands how to set up a problem using vectors and matrices, Matlab makes it easy to "take it from there".

Differential Equations,

#### Differential Equations

Understanding Differential Equations is an integral part of the my Financial Math degree. In fact, Black Scholes equation is really a partial differential equations which is "one step higher" as compared to the Ordinary Differential Equations. In addition, I've taken classes have expertise in the following types of ODE's: --- ODE's with "separable variables" --- first-order linear ODE's --- linear homogeneous and non-homogeneous ODE's --- systems of linear first order ODE's
Linear Algebra,

#### Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra is a big part of Risk Management and Portfolio Construction in Financial Math. In addition to my MS in FinMath from University of Chicago, I've also passed the final exam in Advanced Risk and Portfolio Management Bootcamp. Estimating covariance matrix and diagonalizing it via eigenvectors and their eigenvalues is an exercise which I've done many times in the past. Another area which comes up many times in Financial Math and inseparably related to Linear Algebra is Regression Analysis, i.e. x_hat = (A_t*A)^(-1) * (A_t*b). Yet another area of my expertise (and also connected to Financial Math) is the notion of positive definite matrix (like covariance matrix) or positive semi-definite matrix. This is closely related to calculating the variance of the portfolio via Var = x_t*sigma*x (the idea that covariance matrix is positive definite is the same as stating that portfolio could not possibly have negative variance, no matter what the weights of the constituent securities are). This is also related to the idea of symmetric matrices and why their eigenvalues have to be real (easily shown with linear algebra equations).

#### Patient, organized, caring

Igor was a wonderful match for my 16 year old to prepare her for AP Physics test. He went out of his way to accommodate us in his very busy schedule, he was organized, a positive motivator and inspired my daughter. Igor made the lesson fun, gave her great ideas on how to approach the test, gave her extra homework to focus on. He broke down the material in sections for her that was easily understandable and manageable and I highly recommend him. I will use Igor without hesitation if I ever need a tutor again for my daughter.

#### Highly recommended. Excellent tutor for AP Physics. Warm, approachable, and highly reliable

Igor is one of the best tutors in science/math that we have had. He has made learning AP Physics for my high school junior an enjoyable and successful journey. Igor has a high technical knowledge of Physics and math-based science on the level of a college professor, yet has a warm and highly interactive approach to explaining and teaching to a high school student. It is rare to find a highly qualified science/math tutor who also demonstrates a strong enthusiasm and encouragement for his pupil. He has made learning a challenging college-level science course a successful process for my son. Lastly, Igor is highly reliable with his time and schedule. We highly recommend him!

#### Great Tutor for Physics

Igor has done a great job at tutoring my son in AP Physics. He has been very patient, diligent and willing to accommodate our schedule and the initial needs of our son. I would recommend Igor to any parent / student who is looking for help with Physics or AP Physics.

#### Great tutor, very experienced, a real cheerleader

While my daughter was studying for the AP Statistics exam she realized she needed help getting a handle on the volume of the material and some of the concepts. She had gotten 2's on her practice exams. Igor was able to assess where she needed help and diligently worked with her to understand the concepts she was weak in. He was very patient and was able to teach her things in a way she could better understand them. Most of all my daughter enjoyed working with him because of his upbeat, positive personality. He really gave her the confidence she needed to take the test. We would highly recommend him to anyone.

#### Extremely Thorough Tutor!

Igor seems to be a great fit for my daughter. He is always very efficient and thorough, and is happy to review previous work, and continue to go forward on other topics. My daughter is gaining a better understanding from Igor than she has had all year with her Algebra 2 teacher in school. Thank you, thank you Igor for being such a wonderful tutor.

Igor was very thorough and helpful at explaining material in more understandable terms. He went above and beyond and reviewed my material ahead of time so that he was prepared before the session and also supplying material for me to work on in preparation for the next tutoring session. I would highly recommend him as a tutor! Many thanks, Igor!

As a graduate student, it is a challenge to find a tutor to help with problem sets and exam preparation. It has been fantastic working with Igor, he is very knowledgeable and has a great teaching style. Igor has helped me with courses in linear regression and time series analysis. He is able to explain the underlying concepts and theories in a very clear and intuitive way and has helped me to better understand the connections between various topics in regression, time series and mathematical statistics. He's also provided incredibly helpful refreshers on linear algebra, trigonometry and other more basic undergrad level math concepts that can be easy to forget. I would highly recommend Igor.

#### Highly Recommended!!

Igor was a pleasure to work with. He was quick to respond, and we found a meeting time the very next day. We met at a local Starbucks, and he brought his tablet which made for great interaction, visuals, and further understanding. He was extremely knowledgeable in the understanding of calculus, derivatives, L'hopital's rule, indeterminate form, and explaining the real-world use of these things. I look forward to working with him again, and would highly recommend him!
