I have been teaching in the Adult Education programs for 17 Years (GED, ABE, ESL). I've worked in Meriden, New Haven, Naugatuck, Middletown, Cheshire. I presently teach in Middletown and Cheshire. I have had the opportunity to instruct Beginners through Advanced levels of ESL as well as preparing ABE students for the GED. My experience also includes GED classes. I've been and still am a Literacy Volunteer for Waterbury Ct. Presently, I work with two students on a weekly basis.
Reading and reading comprehension, plus writing are some of my favorite subjects to teach. I spend a lot of time on phonics and pronunciation with my students since this is a vital part of personal and professional communication. I have a MA in Reading from SCSU as well 10 credits toward a 6th. year(Reading) from SCSU (New Haven). I encourage my students to spell and express via writing stories, summaries, letters etc. Conversation and Listening activities are a vital and constant part of my teaching .
I make a point of searching for a variety of subjects and activities and reading materials (IE newspapers, biographies, comics, computer sourced items) to enhance my teaching. I encourage my students to use the computer, practice their English whenever possible and become an effective listener.
Prior to working for Adult Education institutions, I tutored children and adults at home. This was great experience and fun. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My certifications include a BA in Elementary Education from WCSU, an MA in Reading from SCSU, 30 credits toward a 6th year (reading). I taught first grade in Waterbury and Salina as well completed 5-6 years tutoring and working for Special Services in Naugatuck.

Prior to teaching ESL, I had about 5 years of tutoring students either at home or at their homes. We covered Reading, phonics and Math and Spelling. In my capacity of an ESL teacher for Cheshire Adult Education, I use phonics with the Beginner level student, as well as Reading/comprehension.
