The University of Connecticut (History)
I am a 21 year old college student who will be graduating with a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Connecticut in May of 2016. I have commuted to the Stamford Campus of UCONN for all four years because I enjoyed living in the city and am capable and willing of commuting to lessons.
I plan on getting my teaching certificate so that I can teach either middle school or high school level history as well as coaching at either of those levels. I am very flexible in scheduling and willing to do everything I can to make sure we make the times work for both myself and the student. I am going to shadow History teachers in my area to gain more experience working in schools and teaching and helping children.
In my education at the University of Connecticut, I was fortunate to be able to take a wide array of history courses. I took courses ranging Urban American History, US History, Latin American History, History of the Modern Middle East, European History. I have been interested in History since I was in 8th grade and took a number of AP and UCONN level history courses throughout my High School Education.
For the past 4 years I have helped run youth basketball leagues in the Town of Monroe in Southwestern Connecticut for the Parks and Recreation department. My responsibilities include teaching the fundamentals of basketball to the players while also fostering an environment that puts sportsmanship and class ahead of winning. In addition to that I have played basketball for 17 years, and have coached for 4.
I have experience teaching children the fundamentals of basketball, baseball and football and have tutored in history before for people who are practicing for the US Citizenship test. I am very personable and good working with children and enjoy working with children. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken multiple American history courses at the University of Connecticut, whether it was pre-Civil War or post-Civil War until present day. I have tutored American history before as a tutor for young men and women who are studying for the US citizenship exam
For the past 4 years I have worked as a youth basketball league director for the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department in Monroe Ct. My responsibilities as the league director is to make sure all the children get a fair opportunity to play in a safe and enjoyable environment and foster an attitude that sportsmanship and class are more essential than winning a recreation basketball game. In addition to being the director, I have experience as a coach having coached for 4 years, I have been playing basketball for the past 17 years. I have tutored and worked with young men and women in the sport of basketball in the last four years to help them improve their skills and participate in a game they love.
I have taken world history courses pertaining to Latin America, European, Middle Eastern and High Middle Ages and am confident in all of those areas. I was able to succeed in all of my classes in US and World history and enjoy working with children.
