About Catherine

I am currently a graduate student at Columbia University. I will be receiving my Master of Arts in International and Comparative Education in September 2017. I recently received my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Latin American/African studies from Sarah Lawrence College.

I speak English, German, and Spanish fluently. I am the founder and executive director of a children's library in a small, impoverished village in Nicaragua. I developed and established daily program and curriculum such as tutoring programs for primary and secondary students, story hours, and arts and crafts activities in the library. I also trained various women to work in the library on a daily basis and monitor their progress as well as provide educational training workshops for them. I am ultimately interested in working for a non profit organization such as UNICEF or UNESCO in the future.

I have worked for a tutor for several years. I worked at an after school program in Yonkers, NY. and tutored ESL children and provided help on their homework. I also worked as a tutor through the America Reads Program at the Yonkers Public Library assisting children in their mathematics and language arts homework. I worked primarily with ESL children helping them to develop their English language speaking skills through speech and reading. I love tutoring as I love to watch children progress and to document their educational growth as students. I hope to instill a love of life-long learning in each student I interact with.

I have worked as a tutoring with elementary and middle school children at an after school program and at a public library.

I have experience tutoring ESL children in various environments.

I am fluent in German and Spanish. I am able to read and write fluently in both languages and can interact easily with other fluent speakers.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
