I have the academic credentials to teach mathematics, and I have over 6 years of experience with curriculum design/implementation in a business setting. I want to tutor mathematics students because I'm excited about math and I want to practice my skills and fund the pursuit of my masters degree. Both of these are leading me toward a career in education.
My method is constructive - I assess the degree of comfort that a student has with the material first, then build on that understanding progressively. I use real-life examples and meaningful contexts to frame the material in a way that makes sense for each individual student. This approach helps me eliminate that common objection to math - "when am I ever going to use this?"
My bachelor's degree (BA) is in pure mathematics rather than math education. This path makes me a mathematician of breadth and depth. Some of this education occurred after my experience as a corporate trainer, which allowed me to step back and realize that my professors were delivering two types of material to me - the mathematics, and how to teach it.
I have added several subjects beyond mathematics to my catalog, and I am happy to clarify my mastery of the material if you have any concerns.

Tim tutored my daughter for several months in Algebra II and Chemistry. Tim is very kind and patient. He is calm, articulate, and takes his time to explain things as many times as needed. He is also flexible and communicated with me very well about how my daughter was doing. I also enjoyed the detailed updates he gave me each session. I would highly recommend Tim.
I contacted Tim when I realized that my son needed additional support preparing for his exam. He was behind on time and the material was a review over the entire academic year. Tim responded very quickly to my time frame and worked to accommodate our needs with his schedule. After the session, I requested to schedule him again for a second session within the same week.

We retained Tim to do some last minute SAT prep for our son the night before SATs. Tim jumped in and made it a very comfortable and enjoyable prep time the night before a very stressful test. Our son felt that Tim connected with him and where he was struggling and made sense out of his confusion. We highly recommend Tim.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in Mathematics and have spent over 50 hours tutoring algebra at the high-school and college level during the past semester.
I have tutored various calculus students, varying from those preparing for the AP exam to finance majors in college. My knowledge of derivatives and integrals is broad and deep, and I have experience with sequences and series as well. I have studied the basics along with multivariable and vector calculus at the college level, and I completed Real Analysis which involves the proof of concept. My favorite part of calculus is orbital equations, from my Astronomy studies!
I have completed 4 semesters of college-level chemistry at WPI in Worcester, MA.
I completed this course at CCSU with the highest average in my class. Since then, I have applied the concepts of Discrete Math during coursework in Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra, and wrote a research paper in the popular mathematics typsetting program LaTeX that incorporated Discrete Math symbology.
I completed Advanced/University Geometry at CCSU with A average, spring 2016, and independent research in geometric constructions.
I completed Linear Algebra at CCSU with an A average and was the de facto study group leader for a significant portion of my class. I also incorporated Linear Algebra into my major capstone project during a Seminar in Proof, completed May 2016 at CCSU.
Logic factored heavily into my studies as I completed my BA in Mathematics at CCSU. I studied logical statements in Discrete Math, and applied logic to construct exhaustive proofs in classes such as Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Advanced Geometry, and my senior capstone, Seminar in Proof. I have also applied logic in philosophy classes.
I have used Microsoft Excel in a business environment for a dozen years, and as part of college-level science courses like chemistry and astronomy. I have led classes in business use of the program as part of my most recent job.
For over six years, I was the training manager for a company of roughly 60 people. Each time we hired a new employee I would run classes on important workplace skills, and Microsoft Outlook was among the topics. I would also host sessions for existing employees who wanted to increase their effectiveness with the program.
I have completed Calculus coursework up to and including proof of concept in Real Analysis.
In May 2016, I completed an undergraduate course called Public Speaking at CCSU with an A average. In addition, running training sessions and meetings was a major part of my job duties for over 10 years. I facilitated meetings and training sessions at many credit unions throughout CT through the Connecticut Credit Union League. In addition, I have run seminars on personal finance and establishing good credit at high schools as well as at Wesleyan University. I have worked with audiences from 5 to 150 people.
