My goal as a tutor is to bring out the best in students, whether it be through writing, professional development, or academic achievement. To achieve this goal, I will work with my students to determine academic strengths, to develop individualized strategies for success.

I love learning, but I love sharing my knowledge even more. My true passion is for life sciences, but I am interested in anthropology, linguistics, and communication as well. My forte is in professional writing – such as resumes, cover letters, and applications – and in creative writing, though I am also able to assist with analysis. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Washington and am currently working towards my Master of Public Health in Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at Yale University. My ultimate goal is to become a physician. My passion for learning combined with my love of communication make me an excellent tutor. I am able to tailor how I present ideas to each individual student so that they are able to internalize the material in a way that is most beneficial for themselves. To help my students I ask guiding questions to lead my student to the conclusion on their own. Studies done on students have shown that this method is far more effective and produces consistently higher test results.

I have a background in teaching as a writing and microbiology tutor at the University of Washington’s Office of Minority Affairs Instructional Center. The Instructional Center is a study center for UW’s minority population to receive help in their classes. Students came to the writing center to talk through outlines for essays, get help with the editing process, and advice on how to strengthen their writing. When reading a student’s writing, I look to highlight their strengths and address their weaknesses, while maintaining that student’s individual style. As a microbiology tutor, I would help students learn challenging concepts by relating the material to the world around them and to their future career goals. I would also as challenging questions that required my students to think beyond the course material.

I was also the head of Training and Education at the COPE Health Scholars program at Swedish Medical Center in 2016. The Health Scholar program is for pre-health students to explore medicine at the bedside: we worked alongside the nursing staff on different floors of the hospital, assisting with basic patient care tasks, such as feeding, bathing, taking vitals, and comforting patients. I oversaw all training and education in the program. Every three months I would oversee 30 hours of training for new health scholars. Each training session, my team and I would sit down to discuss what went well and what we could improve upon for next time. In addition to overseeing training, I also actively participated in training, giving a lecture or teaching a skill.

In high school I tutored in the biology classes, primarily focusing on anatomy and physiology. Every year, I helped with the pig dissection labs; I wandered from group to group, asking questions along the way to encourage deeper thinking. I focused my energy on groups that were struggling to keep up with the rest of the class and groups that were having difficulty with the material. In these groups, I helped the students determine their gaps in knowledge, and then asked guiding questions to encourage them to think through the problem in different ways.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions or requests. I am excited to begin working with you!
