In 2009, I completed the Alternate Route to Certification program in order to become a Language Arts teacher and began teaching Language Arts in 2011. I must say that the best thing about teaching is establishing relationships with students and parents and seeing their faces when a goal is accomplished. When students dislike reading and writing, it is because they have not found their "just right" book or reading passage that pulls them in. It is a mutual feeling of joy when I see a student overcome this obstacle.

My first year as a teacher, I had one student who refused to write and submit essays because he was not confident in his ability to convey a message to his audience. We went through each step of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, evaluating, revising, editing and publishing. First, my job was to find out what types of books and movies he liked, what held his interest. Once we brainstormed ideas, we worked daily to make sure his short story was something he would be proud to share with others. It required hard work, determination, and the student wanting to become a confident writer.

I love the fact that I can be one of the people in a student's life that helps him or her make a plan to achieve goals and take the steps to become victorious.
