I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little child. I spent many days playing school. Add to that the fact that I love learning. I am curious by nature. Nothing makes me happier than to see 'the light bulb go off" when a student realizes that he understands a concept he/she ha been struggling to master. Furthermore, the confidence children gain when they feel smart is invaluable.
I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading the New York Times and watching CNN. I work during the summer in our school garden with students from our school garden club. I also participate in the after school drama club. After 28 years of teaching I still love going to school every day!
I understand that many students struggle with math and part of that struggle is fear. I encourage students to solve math problems in different ways until they find a strategy that works for them. Hands on activities and real world problem solving strategies are two important ways I like to teach math. Talking about the understanding acquired through these activities is encouraged.
I really enjoy children's literature. Discussions after reading help students to think about, clarify and make meaning out if what they have read. Teaching students to use many different reading strategies to comprehend reading material, including using the artist's illustrations and author's craft and writing style and to understand narrative elements are important
ways to increase reading comprehension and reading pleasure.
What I like best about Common Core State Standards is the increased focus on academic rigor. I like the fact that students are introduced to authentic literature, engaging nonfiction and real world problem solving skills. Thinking and academic discourse among students is encouraged.
I enjoy working with young learners. Most are curious and creative thinkers who are not afraid to look at a problem from different angles. Young children generally love to learn, and learning is exciting when they are paired with an encouraging and patient adult.
After 28 years of teaching, I am still excited about seeing children learn. I mix the old with the new to find just what works for each child. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
