I have been fortunate to have taught in a variety of settings with ten years of experience. I am currently a part-time tutor for a Magnet School, and conduct reading intervention for first grade students. I develop lesson plans and implement reading programs based on each student’s academic needs. The goals I set for them is to reach grade level by the end of the school year. The relationship I build with my students enables them to trust me and feel very comfortable with me. Tutoring young children is rewarding for me because I am able to see their growth in reading and writing skills and most of all they are proud of their accomplishments. The students are often very excited about their take home books because they have a chance to share with family members the books they have been reading. I believe that parent communication is vital to the success of the students. I am available any time by phone or email. I have great resources for leveled books that parents can use with their children.
In addition to tutoring first grade students, I also have over ten years of experience as a preschool teacher. I have implemented successful programs for literacy, writing, and math. Early literacy included writing letters, letter sounds/recognition, and early reading skills. Math included manipulatives to learn number recognition, counting, early addition and subtraction.
I am available to parents anytime. I can be reached by email, text, or phone. All questions will be answered thoroughly about your students goals and progress. I am willing to travel to your home or a local library. I have excellent references as well. I am looking forward to tutoring your child and helping them feel confident and happy in school! Catherine met my daughter and did her initial assessment. I am very pleased with what I see so far. She put my daughter at ease to the point that she is looking forward to her next session. My daughter asked if she could work with Catherine everyday, which I see as a good sign. I hope working with Catherine will help my daughter get to where she needs to be in school. I will follow up with additional comments as they work together more.
My son is showing improvement from Catherine and we are keeping her. Great tutor and very patient with kids. Highly recommend.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and also hold a teaching certificate for grades K-6. I have tutored first grade in the subjects of reading and math for three years. I have also taught summer school for second and fourth grade. In addition, I teaching a CMT Saturday academy preparation class for grade three.
I have taught phonics for preschool students and grade one students. As a preschool teacher, I taught letter names and sounds. For grade one students, I start with having the student blend letter sounds together to form a word. Next, we work on segmenting words by sound. I hold a Connecticut teaching certification for grades K-6 and have a Master's degree on elementary education. Programs I use for teaching phonics are Road to Reading and Road to the Code.
I use a few different programs for reading. I pick a reading program that best fits the needs of the student. I use A to Z reading and Leveled Literacy Instruction. Some students need help with comprehension or decoding. These programs address these needs.
