About Julie

I graduated with the distinction of Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where I majored in psychology. I also received a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hartford.

While I was at Wesleyan University, I worked for the English Department as a writing tutor for students in all subjects and attended a seminar to acquire teaching skills. I worked individually with students and discussed ideas for papers and theses, assisted with the organization of topics within papers, and proofread assignments.

Also while at Wesleyan University, I was a teaching assistant in the Psychology Department. I held study sessions for large groups of students, designed and graded exams, and met with students individually to help them absorb course material.

During my graduate school years, I had the opportunity to work with people from many diverse backgrounds as well as people with various physical and mental challenges. Although most of my tutoring experience has been with adult learners, I did work with elementary school students during these years, helping them learn math and reading skills.

In addition to these experiences, I tutored students in psychology and other social sciences (e.g. sociology, history, anthropology, etc.) as well as writing at Manchester Community College for several semesters.

I believe it is very important to create a positive space for learning, and to instill self-confidence in my students. I show compassion and respect to all of my students, and direct my teaching toward their learning style so that they may achieve their highest potential.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

During my undergraduate years at Wesleyan University, I took and excelled in 2 anthropology classes: Medical Anthropology and Primates and Human Behavior. In medical anthropology, I studied how disease travels along social and economic lines. I learned about systems of healing from a non-Western perspective, and in the past several years have continued to learn more about healing methods in non-Western cultures. I also learned about the interpretation of disease in different cultures. For example, one major research paper I did was on the interpretation of chronic fatigue syndrome in rural China. I learned about practices that seem foreign to us in the United States, such as genital mutilation and the killing of infants by their mothers, and why such practices might occur. The class also focused upon limitations of Western medical thought, such as that shown in the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, one of my favorite readings. In Primates and Human Behavior, I studied Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees. I also studied behavior of other types of primates, and looked at whether social structure, sex differences, learning behaviors, etc. or similar or different in humans. At Manchester Community College, I tutored all social sciences including anthropology for several semesters.
