Hello! My name is Susan, and I can help you learn and improve your English. A native English speaker, I have been teaching both in the classroom and tutoring for twenty-five years. I have a wealth of experience! As an English teacher I teach all levels of English, including grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing, notedly essay writing for both coursework and special purposes. Teaching ESL to students and professionals at the university level, I teach and have designed courses in reading, writing, speaking and listening, pronunciation, and colloquial American speech (idioms and slang) at Yale University, Gateway Community College, and Quinnipiac University.
I will design an individual program of study that will be tailored to your needs. Additional study outside of the tutoring sessions will be assigned for the student to realize his or her greatest potential. Continuity is important; in addition to flexible hours including evenings and weekends, if a session is missed a make-up class can be scheduled.
I have an extensive educational background, attending various schools and graduating from University of Vermont, B.S.; University of Massachusetts; M.S.; University of California, Irvine, 5th year in Education, and Central Connecticut State University with a Master's in TESOL. Combined with life experience, my education has contributed to making me a better teacher who believes in her students and the possibilities education holds.
I'm sure I can help you make your learning interesting and approachable. Learning - it is key to a successful future; let me help you open that door! Hello! Susan is very patient. She knows the subject matter very well, so it made it easy for her to review my paper and give me constructive feed back. This feedback helped me complete writing my paper.
Susan is perfect for my daughter! She is very nice, and an expert at teaching kids. My daughter and I like her very much! My daughter hopes Susan can be her tutor for a long time.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach English because I have a master's in Teaching English as a Second Language which includes not only teaching the language to others for whom it is a second, third, or fourth language, but knowing it thoroughly, as any English teacher who only teaches native English speakers would. This ability to teach English has included teaching English to native speakers at both Quinnipiac University and Gateway Community College. My education has also included extensive writing in excellent English in both written papers, research, and presentation for publication.
In addition to having Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, I have experience in learning other languages, helping to understand how the learner conceptualizes language. I specfically address the needs of the student, whether it be vocabulary, writing, speaking, reading, listening, or the particular content of a class. For over two decades I have tutored and taught ESL to individuals from elementary school to people in their 80s. Tutoring in private homes and teaching at numerous schools and universities, including Gateway, Quinnipiac, and Yale, I have been privledged to teach students of all ages and professions from all over the world.
Writing is easier than many students think. I have a passion for writing and like to share with my students the awareness of being able to organize and support their thoughts, and in the process not only come to like writing, like being able to put their opinions and thoughts down on paper for others to read and understand, but become more proficient at this useful skill.
I have been writing for many years in many venues, including academically (for various, multiple degrees and research) and professionally, teaching classes and tutoring writing from elementary to postdoctorate, including teaching at Gateway Community College, Quinnipiac University, and Yale University.
