I have been playing brass instruments since the third grade, starting with trombone and then moving over to euphonium and tuba in middle school. I have played in many different types of ensembles ranging from traditional jazz bands, Klezmer and Polka bands, large and chamber wind ensembles and orchestras. Since starting with bass clef instruments I taught myself how to play bass guitar in middle school and have gotten lessons as well. I studied piano with a private teacher for one year before going to college and getting two formal years of piano coaching.
I have always been interested in teaching and was given the opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant for the 6th Grade General Music class at my school my senior year. My music director gave me many opportunities to teach the two 6th grade classes by myself. For the second semester, we put together a grant for ukuleles. My plan was to teach the students this instrument rather then the normal curriculum of teaching the recorder, so when the spring concert came around at the end of the year, the students could perform fun music like "Some Where Over the Rainbow" and "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz rather then the typical "Hot Cross Buns." I also taught students trombone, euphonium, and tuba while I attended high school and put together a low brass ensemble of my students for the semester concerts as well.
Overall, I have 3 years of piano study, AP Music Theory in High School, numerous theory and musicology classes at Frost School of Music, UM. I have been playing trombone since the 3rd grade and switched over to tuba and euphonium in 6th and 7th grade but have kept up with trombone equally as much.
Please feel free to contact me at any time. I am available pretty much any day of the week and will be accommodating to time specifications if an appointment needs to be rescheduled. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught General Music to two 6th grade classes and put in a grant for ukuleles and was able to implement a new curriculum where we worked on chord structures and notes but teaching with a ukelele rather than a traditional recorder. I had private students for trombone, euphonium, and tuba for two years while at high school as well. I have been studying music (musicology from Gregorian Chant-21st cent. and theory) since 4th grade in school.
I have been playing the trombone since 3rd grade. I have taken numerous private lessons for both trombone and tuba and have given them as well. I have played trombone in many different settings including jazz band, orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensembles, and trombone choir from 4-21 voice choir. I am a music performance major studying tuba but have continued to play in these ensembles all throughout college including the different choirs and jazz bands at Frost School of Music.
