About Benjamin

Hello,

My name is Ben, and I recently graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in May 2012. My degree is in English with a Literary Theory and Form Concentration. My experience, however, is far from conventional. I have a wife, Jenny, and three children, Leah, Adriana, and Jacoby our newborn. I was a Marine in Iraq, and have been all over the country and the world.

I am also ADD and I didn't know it until I was 26, so I know what it is like to try and get through sitting in class, wanting to listen, pay attention and just do what the other kids are doing. However, this isn't the way we work. We learn differently. LD is not Learning Disability, but Learning Differently, and many of us just get dosed with some drug that kills our creativity when it should be used to help power success and achievement.

I can't guarantee complete success, because nothing is certain when it comes to the human brain. Emotions, motivation, level of interest, and attitude play a huge role in a student's ability to break out. The way classes and teachers are set up is for the typical student, or teaching to the middle. There is good reason for this, but it tends to leave some students behind who need specific attention, but who would otherwise develop on pace or beyond pace if given the right opportunity.

Having children means I get to be around my favorite people all day long. I have been around children since I was one, and it is one of the great joys of my life, but anytime I can help someone out, I will try. There are more qualified tutors out there, there always is, but I can guarantee that none of them will work harder than me.

Thank you,

Ben

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I was diagnosed as ADD at the age of 25, and have not used medication in years for it. I had to learn and interact in a variety of ways as a result of no one knowing what my symptoms meant. I know how hard it is to deal with ADD. On one hand you want to pay attention, but you also want people to accept you for who you are. It is a tough, confusing road, but I can help drive on it.

English

I graduated with a 3.4 GPA from Wesleyan University in 2012 with a degree in English with a Literary Theory and Form concentration. I have also taken many rigorous creative writing workshops and have led student seminars in poetry and short story writing as well.

Literature

The study of literature in many ways is the study of literate thinking. What I mean by that is "literature" usually describes works by great thinkers such as Homer, Emerson, or Shakespeare, and many others. We do not typically ascribe "literature" to Michael Crichton, or W.E.B. Griffin because these authors, while potentially great thinkers, write novels primarily designed to entertain and to make money. There is, of course some overlap, as in Shakespeare wrote his works with a clear goal of making money and entertaining his audience. Shakespeare however, used vocabulary and thematic references that modern authors do not. It really is a fine line and I can help navigate it with you.

Macintosh

At Wesleyan, I was part of a team of students who were responsible for supporting the campus wide computer networks, and a major component of this network was not only Mac computers but all manner of Apple products including iPods and iPads.

Study Skills

As a distracted learner myself, I have needed to develop concrete solutions to ongoing problems that helped me build discipline, and fostered true enjoyment of learning and interacting with my fellow students.

Tennis

I have played tennis from childhood and I have unlimited access to an outdoor tennis court in Norwich CT.

Theater

In high school I was in several shows both dramatic and musical and have continued to perform casually. I also wrote and performed a one person show, have written an adaptation of "The Merchant of Venice," and have acted in a one act film which was nominated for several film festival awards.

Writing

I have been published in several minor special interest publications for both poetry and journalism.
