About Helene

Hello, thanks for checking my page out!

To put my teaching background in a nutshell, I am a graduate of American University, with dual degrees in Literature and Secondary Education. I am a certified English teacher also pursuing my certification in Special Education. I have taught at each grade level from 6th-12th grade and have also worked with students in grades K-3, with focus on struggling readers and foundation math skills.

To quickly discuss who I am as an educator, I am passionate about what I do and I give my students my all. I believe that everyone is their own type of learner, and as a classroom teacher I am exposed to every type of learner. I take great care and thought in striving to help students see their strengths, improve their work ethic, and believe in their capabilities.

Now, let me help take over homework time in your house and help your child see where their capabilities lie!

I am an outstanding English/Reading/Writing tutor because I love reading myself and love showing others what can be learned or discovered from a great novel, a powerful poem, a captivating speech, or an enthralling biography. I love writing as a form of expression, but more importantly as a form of teaching, empowering, and communicating. I am an outstanding study skills, project management, public speaking, test prep tutor because I have spent over 8 years in the classroom playing a variety of roles, but primarily the classroom teacher role. Part of my role as a classroom teacher is helping students identify skills, tools, resources, and strategies to take with them on their future path. For any assignments I create and issue to my own students, they must work to identify and implement these skills, tools, resources, and strategies. I have become skilled in providing students multiple opportunities for success and providing multiple options for selecting which skills, tools, resources, and strategies work best for them. I am an outstanding tutor all around because I take great care in helping students find and determine their skills, strengths, areas of improvement, and passions.

If you're looking for someone to help challenge you, but also to help you overcome your struggles then contact me. I love what I do, I love helping others, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

Having been a classroom teacher with students with Individualized Education Plans and on the autism spectrum, along with having completed graduate course work towards a Special Education certification, I feel comfortable and confident in my abilities to help support those on the autism spectrum by providing personalized strategies to help achieve learning goals as well as social/emotional goals. In addition, I also spent a year working 1:1 with a student with low functioning autism. I helped support this student by providing: life skills cues and stories, practice with fine motor development, and academic support in the classroom working on note taking and memory recall.

Public Speaking

I believe I am highly qualified to tutor in the area of public speaking because I have been designing and creating presentations as part of being a classroom teacher for the last 8 years. I have assigned speech writing and presenting to my students during each of those years, at multiple times throughout the year. I have also given speeches at awards ceremonies at school events and have achieved a level of comfort with speaking in front of large bodies of people and diverse audiences.
