About Shelley

Hi! My name is Shelley. I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a technical school that has been standing in tandem with the best engineering schools in the nation. Throughout my high school and college years, I had consistently demonstrated academic excellence in Math, Science, and Engineering.

My similar tutoring experience was acquired from being a learning coach for Physics in a college classroom setting, mainly to guide students to work through Physics problems supplementing to professor's lectures. I also have experience in tutoring High School Geometry.

I am looking to use my strength in Math and Science to be a big influence on students' learning strategies. I am proud of my patience and passion in clarifying things and shedding light on students, and showing them how to use best practices to solve problems. Through my tutoring, I strive to interact with students to see how they learn individually, suggest strategies for them to learn better and faster, and improve their learning outcomes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

MATLAB

MATLAB was one of the primary tools I used for my undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering. We used it to solve for very complicated math/engineering problems. For example, MATLAB along with Simulink was used in one of my advanced engineering project with the goals to simulate and control a two-wheeled robot to stand up and balance itself, despite of external disturbance. I am able to show/tutor others the versatile functions and features in MATLAB.

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I first attended Syracuse University for the first two years of undergraduate study. My GPA at Syracuse University was 3.85, and 3.21 at RPI. I believe I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject because I was able to excel at all the core engineering and math courses in Mechanical Engineering. Plus, the colleges I attended have very good engineering programs - especially RPI's, it ranks within 30 places among the best engineering school in the nation.

Python

I took Computer Science I at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The course mainly used Python as the programming language. I received A- for the course. I didn't go to lectures and TA office hours a lot for this course because I was able to learn the materials, do the lab problems, and accomplish homework assignments all by myself. I believe I am able to teach others this subject.

Solidworks

I studied Mechanical Engineering at college. Solidworks was frequently used for my engineering projects. I am able to understand the functions and features in SolidWorks, and also make 3-D drawings using it. I believe I can teach others to acquire the skills.
