About Alfred

I am a retired university professor and have taught regular high school and college English. Certified also to teach English to speakers of other languages, I have taught English to students from Russia, China, Italy, Cyprus, Taiwan, and Korea, With 25 years experience teaching all levels, elementary, high school, and university, I am creative and interesting when I teach. TOEFL and SAT test preparation are my specialty and have taught them successfully to 13 students in the past year. I like to do the following when teaching my students:

#1. Find out for what purpose you want lessons and do an initial formal and informal assessment to determine your needs necessary to achieve your goals.
2. Develop a Plan of Study for sets of 8 lessons at a time delineating what you need to learn.
#3. Give you lessons that are interesting, engaging - and fun.
#4. Give you a test at the end of each set of 8 lessons to see your progress up to that point.

MY LESSONS CAN BE IN PERSON OR ONLINE THROUGH SKYPE.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have been teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking for some 25 years from the elementary school level to high school to university. Areas of instruction include:
1. Creating clear and concise sentences, including vocabulary development, grammar and punctuation.
2. Paragraph construction based on the "hamburger model", including unity, transition, and coherence
3. Writing papers that are impressive also based on the "hamburger model", developed particularly for young people. (Constructing a hamburger is like constructing a hamburger).
4. How to research material for a paper and writing about what you found without being guilty of plagiarism.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified teacher of ESL, English as a Second Language or ESOL, English for Speakers of Other Languages. I have taught English to non-native speakers both in class and online for 25 years.

Reading

We cover all the techniques of critical reading and reading comprehension. Discussing the characteristics of narrative, persuasive writing, descriptive writing, we do short reading passages for understanding and critique. Passages are utilized to train the student in the thinking skills necessary for academic success and the enjoyment of reading in general.

SAT Reading

My focus in SAT preparation is teaching the vocabulary necessary for both the test and for success in University studies. Using the College Board's Manual, The Official SAT Study Guide, you will increase your vocabulary with the "100 Words Every College Student Should Know". In addition we will do extensive work in critical reading and training in impressive writing. Since the purpose of the SAT is to determine whether or not you can be successful in University study, our focus for the test and for college is English for Academic Preparation (EAP).

SAT Writing

We study the following:

1. Sentence structure, including vocabulary, grammar and structure that makes your sentences impressive.
2. Using the "Hamburger Model" of paragraph writing, we study the correct structure of a paragraph that expresses unity, coherence and transition within the "hamburger" model of a topic sentence, supporting statements, and concluding sentence.
3. Qualities of an impressive paragraph are applied to the term paper as a whole.

TOEFL

We use the latest Manual on TOEFL available, Barron's TOEFL IBT including much of my own material developed for my university courses. The materials I use depend upon the proficiency level of the student. If the student is "Low Intermediate", I choose material to bring him/her to "High Intermediate' and so forth. To achieve an acceptable score in TOEFL, the student must be on the "High Intermediate" or "Low Advanced" level. We set the goal and then study the 100 words every student should know for success in TOEFL and the academic skills you will need: critical reading, effective writing, impressive speaking, and accurate listening.

Vocabulary

In vocabulary development we study the following:

1. The "100 Words Every High School and College Student Should Know" as determined by the experts at Princeton University.
2. We study the words needed on the SAT or TOEFL.
3. Since there are two issues in vocabulary development, namely, the meaning of the word and the usage of the word, we study 10 words at a time in which:
a. I explain the meaning of the word
b. You try giving me a sentence
c. You take a fill-in-the-blank quiz together with me.
d. You take a test after each set of 20 words.
4. Together we study sample vocabulary for the SAT and TOEFL "sentence completion" items.

Writing

Study Plan after diagnosis of writing:
1. Review sentence structure: grammar, parallelism, vocabulary, punctuation, etc.
2. Evaluate paragraph structure for unity, coherence, and transition.
3. Evaluate thesis structure, paralleling paragraph structure, using the "Hamburger Model"
4. Review the difference in descriptive, persuasive, expository writing, etc.
5. Avoiding plagiarism through paraphrasing.
