Hi!! My name is Kari and I've been teaching for ten years. I'm certified in Elementary Education and reading and recently completed coursework towards a sixth year certificate.
I love teaching, literacy, and working with children. I prefer to work with elementary students and use their interests to develop lessons that will help build their literacy skills.
I'm looking forward to working with you! Have a great spring and summer!
Reading and elementary education
I'm an outstanding phonics tutor because I use research-based assessments to determine exactly what the student needs to learn and what skills he/she has already mastered. I progress-monitor to ensure that as lessons continue that the student is meeting the learning objectives as we meet.
I'm an outstanding spelling tutor because I know that spelling and phonics are linked to various stages of literacy development, and through assessment I would determine what stage the student is in and what the goals for future instruction should be.
I'm a warm, committed, literacy teacher that would use scientifically research-based instructional materials to make sure that the student is improving and developing their literacy skills in ways that help them enjoy reading and writing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm certified to teach elementary education and remedial reading in Connecticut. I've been teaching Kindergarten, Pre-K, and reading since 2010 and have remediated and tutored several students during that time period as well. As part of the reading foundations test, you are required to answer questions accurately that speak to your understanding of phonics in order to pass the test and qualify for the certifications that I named above.
